I would guess that with a cam that lumpy, you probably have the throttle blades open so far that your into the transfer slot. This will make your eyes water and sometimes give you an off-idle...

GM 454 crate motor

How does GM manage to get 450HP out of this motor when it has a small cam, and only 8.75 compression? Are they exaggerating the #'s ?
