Yes, the dome light should turn on when you turn the headlight knob all the way to the left. Turning the knob to the right will dim all the gauge lights.

All 81s came with both a mechanical fan and an electric fan. Do you still have both on your car? If so I would not expect any cooling issues, If all the factory parts are there and working.

Yes, it was the vacuum modulator on the Turob 350 Tranny that was causing my problem. Had that replaced, and no more smoke, the others could be right, this is just another possable solution.

I did not see what year or tranny you have so this might not apply , but I had this on my 80 with the automatic tranny. The auto trannys have a vacuum switch that drops the gears down from 3 to 1...

Make sure your power steering control valve has been balanced. I had this same problem on my 1980, balanced the control valve and the car is so nice to drive.

I'm really not sure how much it helps. GM droped it on the 80 81 and 82 and those don't run any cooler then the C3 with. Does anyone think it helps save the paint on the hood?

Ok, the drivers acknowledge eachother, should the passenger chime in or is just the driver acknowledge enough? But if the passenger does nothing.. then will they get bashed like some C6 drivers do?
