I have an 85 and I wouldn't bother with getting a chip burned. The 85 will tolerate a lot of changes without needing to get a new chip.

The easiest way I've found is to grind off the top of the rivets like you did. I then used a punch to push the rivet out completely. Once you have the rivet out the ball joint will fall out.
