I had really good luck with Quality Care Automotive. They diagnosed the misfiring cylinders on my 92. Price for the work was fair, needed new injectors, and the guys there knew what they were doing....

The X pipe will give you a different sound. Usually a higher pitched exhaust note, not a deep rumble. It will scavenge the cylinders better at low rpm. May make your popping sound worse - can't say...
