It will work however they are designed to be mounted horizontal. It will skip every time you hit a bump if it is mounted vertically. I have one and just leave it lay in the bottom of the center...

Retainers were installed to keep the rotors in place during assembly. The wheel and lug nuts hold the rotor in place. You can discard the retainers.
