I went to start my 87 which normally cranks right up and instead of starting it cranked and then it was like someone had stuck a crowbar in the works(loud metallic sound) and I backed off of the key....

If, the power steering does turn out to be low, I recommend Lucas power steering fluid. In fact, you might extract current fliud and fill with Lucas anyway.

I have found the same thing with my 87 and recommend that it be solved by disconnecting the battery for long term storge, or, do what most of us do and use a small "float" charger to keep the battery...
