The fact that GM was willing to spend the money on changing the '69 and up bolts to 1/2" is pretty solid proof the originals were undersized.

Now lets talk about 7/16" wheel studs... ;)

That same carpet set probably also more than doubled in the 15 years before 1988...
So in the last 40 years it's probably gone...

If the 396 is a big block and the car is set up for it I'd stick with one.
A lot of guys have spent a fair amount of money on the pulleys and stuff to swap in a big block.
