I have just purchased an '89 convertible with an L83. The car looks great and has 98K miles. What would be my best use of approximately $500 for performance upgrades?

NO2

L83 is the RPO for a Crossfire Injected motor used in 82 and 84 Vettes, and F-body's.

Sure you don't mean L98?

Hmmm -

My VIN is 1G1YY3183K5nnnnnn and I thought the 8 was a reference to the L83, but I now see it was L83 and L98 ! - Live and learn!

Yep... that K in your VIN means 1989. http://www.corvetteforum.cc/ubb/smile.gif

March 3-pc Power & Amp pulleys & belt. $150
Crane adj. fuel press. regulator. $70
Air Foil & K&N air filter. $110
High flow Catco main cat. $110
Pacesette dual Monza tips in place of mufflers. $85
Port plenum and gut the pre-cats.
This is a little over $500 but you'll be happy with the results until you can get more involved than bolt ons. If you want sources for these parts e-mail me. Don't forget a good set of ignition wires, plugs, wires & cap & rotor.

Yea what john25 said. Plus you can gut your air pump, tb bypass, open air filter lid. Which are all "FREE" mods.

How do you gut your air pump?? will this work on an 85?

These are good suggestions. I'll start with the no cost stuff and go from there. It sounds like the filter should be one of the first purchases!

Can someone help with detail on:

Open Air Lid description
Cut Spark Plug Electrods
gut your air pump, tb bypass

Thanks for the suggestions! I'm ready to tweak this ride!

Wes

Basically you cut the front of the lid off so that it exposes the air filter. Leave just a border around the edges to keep the air filter firmly in place, but remove the face of the lid. [img]http]//www.corvetteforum.cc/ubb/smile.gif[/img]

$160-cold/ram air intake w/ K&N filter.
$ 90-HyperTech coil/cap/rotor.
$ 60-TPIS wires.
$ 0-Cut back spark plug ground electorde & gap to .045".
$ 15-160 deg stat.
$ 40-160 deg HyperTech aux fan sw.
$ 5-splice & spade lugs & wire (see my C4 tech description).
$ 0-gut the MAF.
$ 10-TB bypass parts.
$ 40-MAT relocation kit
$ 60-HyperTech AFPR.
$ 50-ACCEL fuel pressure gauge.
$ 0-Remove "frisbee" from water pump pulley.
$530-Total

These mods should net you about 30 HP or so, enough to feel nicely and keep you busy for a while.

Later whan you have $500-$1000 have a custom 2 1/2" front Y-pipe made up, install a Random Tech cat, install muffler elims or a TPIS Flow Master cat-back. These will get you another 30 HP or so.

If you lose the spare/jack/etc and carry a puncutre repair kit and cell phone you will be about 50 lbs lighter (similar to 5HP). Cruise with about 1/3-2/3 tank of fuel and you will be 70lbs lighter than a full tank (similar to 8HP).

I'm also sending you data on L98 mods.
