Replacing gas tank on 1970.
 

Has anyone out there had to replace a gas tank on a 1970 vertte? If so any tricks of the trade. I am finishing a restore job & we have rust in the tank so we will replace everything up to the fuel pump.

Tanks still available new from GM... 1970 tanks were not all the same.
But GM tanks are not boxed for protection from scratches/damage.

Empty out the gas before you start.

Have some new fuel line & clamps handy.
Might need a new o-ring seal for the sending unit as well.
Filler neck gasket... ditto.
Original felt pad between tank & tank support is thicker than the roofing paper replacement sold by aftermarket vendors.

If you need/buy them, new correct GM straps are hard to bend to conform to the original brackets... I had to media-blast & refinish my old straps. The new ones just would not go in.

I replaced the tank in my 72 and used new sraps fom GM, no problem.
Also, you might want to consider repacing the overflow line and rubber boot that goes around the filler neck.

Ok, thanks for the input. I've decided to replace EVERYTHING ie: tank, straps, nipple, overflow, gaskets, boot, sending unit, fuel lines, brackets.

ARG ... I just ripped my rubber overflow boot last night ... trying to persuade
it to come off the tank.

Mine is pretty rusty, but I decided to go with the tank sealer kit from POR15.

Remember to look for the build sheet if this is the first time the tank has been removed. I removed the tank on my '69 and the build sheet was still readable.

First Corvette forum and glad to be here! And I agree with the previous post "You guys are good!"
As you can tell, I own a 1969, LeMans Blue, T-Top with the following:
- 350 ci, .060 over, aligned, decked, flat top pistons
- Dart heads
- 650 Demon Carb.
- MSD (including distributer)
- Holley Blue fuel system with braided steel lines
- All roller/rocker (cam, lifters, rockers, etc...)

I just replaced mine and it is easy. I got my new tank from http://www.gastanks.com. I researched for the best price and they sell theirs for 198.00. It is a correct tank with all correct markings and stamps if that is a concern. It came with the filler neck gasket, bolts and the sending unit o-ring and clamping collar. Is your car a BB, LT1 or base model? Mine is a base model and the gastank.com part number is GM-33D. This is for a 1970-74 350 with EEC. I did get the tank strap cushions from Zip but was very disappointed with the cushions because all they amounted to was 40# tarpaper. I have a whole roll of that in my garage and could have saved a few bucks...oh well.

Dave - I ripped my boot trying to remove it also. I reused it because it didn't rip all the way through and I am very careful when I fill up anyway. I will get a new one someday.
