whats a good inexpensive amp?

I'm going for the Sony CDX mp 30 mp3 player for sure. My current clarion amp which is only driving my 6X9's is on the fritz and keeps turning on and off the rear speakers(driving me nuts) Should I get a two, or four channel amp? My 5"1/4 MB Quarts in the sills have tweeters in the doors...but they're not running off the amp for some reason(installation laziness?).

What does everyone like? I don't want to blow the top off the car, nor do I want to break my wallet in two. Responses are appreciated.

Well you got decent stuff, a real low quality amp will ruin it. For cheep, hmmm. how about the Sony X-plod, Profile, Pioneer, even alpine has some lower end stuff. The X-plod is probably your best bet, built in eq and good reliability. Do some shopping though you might get surprised.

If you want bang for your buck! Earthquake amps are clean, powerful, and not so expensive. We were a dealer for them and are comparable to the RFs for less  .

Best bang for buck is either Pioneer or sony, sound quality aspect both lines will give decent sound at moderate price ranges. 4 channel would be best of any suggestion for simple ease of control and installaton.

As far as Earthquake, it's a good line, plenty of power and good sound quality, but finding a dealer in the past couple of years has kinda been hard.

Many people on other boards talk about Lanzar as low priced high power. Have a look @ those too.

I went with used. Ask if anyone on the board has one they want to sell :)

Thanks for the replies. I'm still searching. I am - close to ripping the old amp out. On the way home from our summerhouse the amp kept shutting the back speakers on off on off on off! :mad :cuss

Is the amp very hot when the back speakers are shutting off? What about the wiring for the amp, 4 ohm stereo, 2ohm stereo?

Re: whats a good inexpensive amp? (JoeyG)

I donno anything about the wiring. It was done back in early 1998. It does it when the car is cold, warm, whenever. I've had a friend sit in the car with me, leave the back storage compartment (Where the amp is) and He watched and felt the amp to see if it was becoming warm or if the LED flickers. It acts completely normal...but shuts off the speakers when it wants. It's really un-nerving as of late(It's been doing this since last November...it just is more consistent now).

Thanks once more for responding.

definitely definitely US Acoustics like the above poster mentioned. You can buy them at http://www.crutchfield.com They put out as much power as they claim and they never fail. In case they do, they come with a 3 year warranty from Crutchfield.

Under the advice of my installer, I am going with a rockford punch 300X(also recommended in my other post) sounds like the type of amp I need.

Appreciate the replies....thanks again. FWIW pricegrabber.com seems to be the lowest.

Re: whats a good inexpensive amp? (JD 90 383)

Get a 75x4 amp and run all off the amp. This will even out the sound and allow you to get the full potential from your speakers. http://www.mmxpress.com/alpine.htm The F200 amp should fit the bill for under $200.
Stay away from Sony and Pioneer amps. They stink. The RF is good but costs alot more. The alpine is a decent low cost amp. US is also good. With the alpine amp, your weak link will be your rear speakers.

I like the sound of the under $200 deal :) Options are nice.

Like I mentioned...I don't want to blow the roof off, just good clear sound.

Thanks 92 triple black!

92TripleBlack....

I know that you absolutely know your stuff when it comes to stereos. I am wondering why you say that Pioneer stinks. I am just curious is all. I have just installed a pair and they sound great. I have nothing but compliments from many people about how they sound.

Just curious as to where the basis for the amp ratings come from. Is there a consumer report or something done by the real people that use them?

Please advise.

thanks,

Re: whats a good inexpensive amp? (MY2K2C5)

From installing them for years. Pioneer is great at decks but no offense, for the money there are better amps and/or speaker components out there. The amps lack the warmth and sound more dead than higher quality amps. Hard to put into words. Speakers are just crap. Most makers known for head units aren't the best at the rest of the components and vice versa with a few exceptions. For example, poineer makers good decks, RF makes decent amps. But I'd much rather have a pioneer deck and RF amp than the other way around. Hope this helps and JD if you need a hand with the amp, let me know. I'll be out the next few weekends BBQing and going to the worlds largest Paintball game (3000 Players) but after that I'll be around.
