61 Genrator
 

The generator in my 61 has 1102115 8F 5 on the tag. Is this the right tag/generator for my car that was built in May of 1961?

It should be a 1102043 with a tach drive on the rear for ALLLLLLLLLLLL engines EXCEPT the solid lifter FI engine.

If it is a solid lifter FI engine, the early generator should be 1102173 and the late one was 1102268. NEITHER had the tach drive. On the solid lifter FI engines, the tach was driven by the distributor.

My generator has the tach drive on the rear. Do I search out another generator simply change the tag?

A 1102115 generator was a Power Steering generator for some trucks and some passenger cars as well. It's a 35 Amp generator, and will work functionally the same for a Corvette tach drive application. It's quite possible a rebuilder in the past simply used the 2115 case and built it around correct Corvette generator end frame and front frame....or not. The Corvette frames are different from Pass/Truck frames.

It was probably a service replacement, and as Tom said you should have the 1102043 on the non-FI configuration.

Yes you could change the tag to the correct number and date if you want for that period correct effect. That's what I did on a non-Corvette generator recently. There are telltale signs to those in the know however. More info here.

As Rich has pointed out, your generator is for a mid-late 50s PS vehicle.
If it is functiioning fine and if the tach drive is working satisfactorily, it will be OK as is. But, if you plan to have it judged, then you may wish to have a new tag made up for it (I'm sure Rich can recomment a reliable source for a new tag). I do know that there is a difference in which O or 0 is correct, but it's been so long since I had one made, I forget which one is correct.
If you should decide to replace the tag, then pick a date (at least 2wks prior to assembly of your car) that you think you would like to have on the tag----------------check the 1961 calender to make sure the date you select is not on Sat-Sun.

Thanks guys. I really appreciate all the great information. I doubt I will ever have the car judged but I do want it to be as correct as possible. Like I stated in another post I got this car from a neighbor who has had it since 1963. He and his father maintained the car well and it has never been messed with or rebuilt other than a cosmetic restoration in 1998. They changed the color from Jewel Blue to Black on black with silver coves. So the motor in it is original as are the manifolds, carb, transmission and rear end. The generator and the radiator have been replaced though. The only thing I don't really like about this car is the Automatic Powerglide transmission. The car has about 100,000 miles on it. The odometer broke at 78,000 and I bought it a few years after that. The car had not been driven more than a few hundred miles since 1999. Thanks again.

If you you should decide to replace the generator tag (with a correct 043 tag), it will arrive FLAT. Place the new tag on something round, such as a length of pipe, and work it until it has a contour in it. Then put it on.

I may just buy the correct generator that is already restored and ready to go as this one needs a facelift anyway and I was going to have it rebuilt.

If you look for a 2043 "correct" generator, research first. May of us over the years, me included, have bought it because it had 1102043 on the tag....

WRONG.

They show up on Ebay and even the sellers don't know that what they have is not correct for Corvette. They ask enormous prices and what they have is a converted power Steering generator for a passenger car. They even show pictures of the end frames that are wrong, claiming Corvette.

As mentioned earlier, the end frames are different, in both appearance(front) and measurements from the attach bracket ears to the center of the armature.(both front & rear)

A correct tag on the wrong generatgor is still a wrong generator. The end frames are different.

David's stuff can be pricey, but he typically has correct stuff. I recall seeing some of his on Ebay and they're right. He knows what's correct on these. David did some good stuff for me over the years. Others have had issues but many other vendors do too. Maybe the moon or solar flares or whatever, but I've been pleased with Cranes. This was for over 25 years of time.

But the problem is this as far as price goes. All those wrong ones on Ebay are big bucks, way over priced, deceptive, etc. becasue they're so high $, others with the absolutely correct stuff get even more!

Call John Pirkle Jr too. I'd shop around.
