'49 Olds was the first, followed by a '31 Model A 5-window coupe. Then after they were gone and I finally got a driver's license, I bought a '52 Mercury.

To qualify for ugliest, my car was flat black, green cloth interior, three on the tree (although it had been modified with a caddie V8 under the hood and an auto tranny). The remains of the "stick" on the column were still evident. No hubcaps, wheels were painted black.

1958 Ford Custom 300 same color as the picy. Bought it just before I turned 16 with $$$ I had made from cutting grass. It had a 312 Thunderbird engine which was seemingly indestructible.(BTW, It ate 283 Chevys.}
It had a factory hood scoop. All you had to do was knock out the emblem in the hood and put in some screen wire.

I got my first car in 2001. It was what was left of a 1987 v6 camaro. Was my 17th birthday (NJ driver got to wait that extra year) gift from my mom that she spent a couple hundred dollars on. It was all she could afford, single mom, 4 kids, not much money to go around obviously. Me and her boyfriend got it up and running eventually, although it didn't even make it a year. We did some creative things and I got to make this phone call on the side of the road that I will never forget the words of. "Hey Paul, remember the way we rigged up the power steering and you said it would hold, yeah well it kind of just fell out while I was driving". There was soo much damage and I had saved up some money from working we gave up on the project after that

In 1967 I bought a '54 MG TF for $600. It burned a little oil and when my Dad and I rebuilt the motor we found only one piston still had all the rings and all four had broken skirts. Still did 50 mph though! We ended up rebuilding the whole car and drove it daily until I went into the Navy in 1969. In 1970 the engine seized due to a broken valve. I kept the car even though it didn't run until 2002 and sold it for $8000. I still miss it too.

H.S. -- Bandit Trans Am, others through college years. I've always had more than one car. If talk
sport cars after Trans Ams went to Vettes. As for second vehicles been trucks or
SUV's. Usually trade something every 2 years. C6 has been around the longest
of any car, only has 9,000 miles

This is the first time not going too on the vette. The C7 is neat looking but for now I
just don't want one. Not like past vettes where go man I want one of those new
trim models.

Find myself more interested in a the new Silverado or BMW X5

Priced out a C7 vert. If trade my present 9,000 mile C6 would have to come up
with $50,000. Guess you finally go are cars worth that kind of money.

+1 for the 1972 Gran Torino! That was my fourth car and how I wish I still had it. Mine had the Q code 351 "CJ" motor with 4 speed. It was green like the one in the movie, so now if I wanted to find another one it will cost an extra arm in addition to the arm/leg. Thanks Clint!

A new 1965 Corvair 500 coupe with power glide transmission. I worked at a Chevrolet dealer detailing new cars for delivery. I paid $2,150, dealer cost. While reminiscing about my first car I left out its somewhat interesting demise. I worked at a car wash with my best friend who had a '69 Biscayne with a 427 and TH400. After work, we swapped cars because he wanted to learn to drive a manual, and I wanted to smoke his tires! We arranged to meet up later.

I felt a little guilty about all the burn-outs, but that feeling subsided when I saw my Beetle. He had driven it into a new subdivision where the pavement had not yet been laid, only bulldozed clear. While he was "off-roading" he rolled the Beetle completely and managed to crush practically every body panel. He had to pull the fenders off the wheels to let the car roll. The car was drivable and I later parted out most of it down to a rolling chassis, which I sold to a guy for a dune buggy project.

My next car was a 1964 Dodge Polara, my first V8 car.

First car...one of the ugliest of all modern cars?

My first car was a 1961 Plymouth Fury, dark metallic turquoise with a white roof and silver/gray interior.

I say ugly because it had a horizontal "fin-ish" look to the trunk/rear end, kind of like a '59 Impala but flatter across the top of the trunk lid. Also had weird, "free-floating" tail lights mounted to the sides of the rear fenders. And overall, had a ton of chrome moldings/trim, front grille, headlight rings, etc.

'61 Corvair, and yes it was a P.O.S.

1966 Chevy Impala 4-door sedan, white with a black interior. Bought it for $200 in 1971 from a 90 year old neighbor who (wisely) decided to stop driving. It sat in the driveway for 4 months while I saved up enough money to insure it . . . Which was OK, it gave me time to learn Basic Auto Repair 101: Tune-up, brake job, body work, etc. While all of my friends made fun of Moby (the White Whale), wherever we went we always took my car. First of all, it would easily carry eight of us. More importantly, it always started, always got us there, and always got us all home. That car never failed me, even once. She had just over 140K on her when I sold her, and that kid drove her another 3 or 4 years. Truly a great first car.

1968 Firebird 4speed for $250. No motor, the nose was white and the rest of the car green. Bought a totaled Pontiac Catalina for $100 and installed the 389 from it. Added a Qjet 4 BBL, dual exhaust and Cragers. It looked like crap but it screamed. Never had enough money to finish the bodywork. Those were the days kids worked and paid for their own cars.

:iagree: Chrysler sure had some bizarre designs in the early '60's.
Wouldn't mind having one now, though.

1948 Dodge, I paid $75 for it. I drove it for a year, then it died. 58 years ago.

My folks gave me a 1964 Pontiac Catalina with a lot of problems that they were going to junk. (although the after market AC worked great!)
Would not pass inspection, so I went to Sears and bought a tool set & fixed it.
Still have most of those tools 40 yrs later.
