For anyone running 160-180 thermostats chime in
 

Looking to change out the tsat. I was planning on going with a 160 will this have any effect on winter driving or anything else? Should I get the 180 or stick with the stock. I do want the car too run a little cooler(modified motor)

I have been running a 160 for years. I only drive the car in the non winter months. When it was dyno tuned (After I did a heads and cam change) the tuner set the fans to come on at 180.

A t-stat change by itself will NOT do all that much, it will just take longer before it gets to the same temps as it did before.

You need to have some type of fan control to actually get the car to run cooler. Do a search, there is a vendor on the forum that sells a kit, or you can make manual switch.

I would go with a 180 if you drive it in the winter - but it also depends on what mods you made and what the winter is like where you live.

If you aren't tracking the car and building an extensive new cooling system (new radiator/fans/everything) or running an iron block, no real point in my opinion.

The LS motors were designed and built around a certain operating temperature. Running the motor too cool can be just as damaging as too hot.

Thanks the car is stroker motor the fans are set to come on earlier just seeing if the the tstat would help

I would put a 160 in it....the inside of the car is small and ya prob dont have to have your heat on long already before its sweating ya out of the car already do ya?

Adv. to running a Lower T- Stat is being able to add more timing w out getting Spark Knock and the only draw back is losing a couple MPG

I dont see how it could Damage anything and have been using and installing 160 stats in my own cars and every other Ls Car in my town w Mods.....

I have a 160 t-stat in my z and I drive mine in the winter. I don't have any issues with heat.

I run a 160 in the summer and swap to stock when it gets cold. That seems to keep my oil temps around 200 on the street which is what I want. Be careful running a cold thermostat in cold months as it will keep your coolant temps and oil temps down, and if the oil doesn't get hot enough it will cause wear on your motor.

Swapping out the thermostat is really quick and easy and you only dump a quart or so of coolant.
