Supercharger install pics!

Ok here is the first installment of me doing this. The package arrives sometime today by FedEx, so decided to start work anyway.

First.....the shop is cleaned up and counters are ready for work.

https://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphot...23444525_n.jpg

Next, pulled hood off.

https://fbcdn-sphotos-f-a.akamaihd.n...34670739_n.jpg

I hope I find out where this goes after the install.

https://fbcdn-sphotos-h-a.akamaihd.n...91513141_n.jpg

Getting ready to pull steering rack to pin the crank. I don't really want to cause I hate all the trouble....but.

https://fbcdn-sphotos-a-a.akamaihd.n...92837412_n.jpg

Of course I NEVER do anything without ****ing something up, notice the nipple broken off the radiator? That's going to involve some creative repair later.

Seems like a good excuse for a shorter rad purchase. That hose will just come off. Leave where it's connected to open to atmosphere.

What kit did you get?

sfc rick 07-17-2013 03:08 PM

BOX ARRIVED....A BIG BOX!

3.6...... I'm much more concerned on where to put my "supercharged" logo's .....

You already now where this is all headed in the end. But I'm taking it step by step to drag the enjoyment duration for at least a few years. Money and time are on my side.

Yea, that's going to be a sore spot for sure, maybe I should paint it checkered flag pattern? Hahahahahah

No, it's staying polished and I'm just going to shoulder the burden and Drive on.

"High speed, low drag"

My favorite vehicle, so the Vette has a lot to live up to and the S/C will help with that.

JetMechZ16 07-18-2013 08:48 AM

I've been wanting to SC my Z06, been holding off cause I want to upgrade all down the line so I don't start breaking the weak links later on. I went through that on my 70 Mach 1, build engine = four broken trannies. Build tranny = twisted driveshaft+ broken U joints + broken tailshaft housing. Upgrade driveshaft + U joints = Broken U bolts holding axle to leaf springs + broken axle studs and almost losing wheel, only 1 lug holding it on. Don't want to follow that path again.

From a engineering standpoint and years designing, THERE WILL ALWAYS BE A WEAK POINT. Finding them is easy, avoiding them is just time related.

Sometimes we have engineered weak links. Usually someting that is not cost prohibitive and easily replaced is best. Just how weak to make it can be difficult, want it just weak enough to fail before other more costly parts, but don't want it to fail too easily.

mstromquist 07-18-2013 12:39 PM

See you have a '98 too. Have you done anything to the motor yet and how many miles do you have? Mine is still pretty much stock and I probably have a few more miles on mine than you do on yours. Been debating this for a while now. Have fun with the install. Looks like fun.

Today I completed the crank pinning.....and it was a pain just like the last time I removed the steering rack, although I'll admit it wasn't as bad since I knew what to get and where it was.

First had to remove stuff and make way to the crank and pull the crankshaft bolt.

https://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphot...31611810_n.jpg

Then I used the simple jig provided in the kit and drilled the 1/4" hole and installed the pin.

https://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphot...75228410_n.jpg

Now it's all back together waiting for tomorrow to begin the next phase of supercharger upgrade.

https://fbcdn-sphotos-d-a.akamaihd.n...28247140_n.jpg

Done for today....will start again in the morning.

Sad to say, but a guy just barely survived getting away alive when a car loaded with 4 criminals pulled up for a home invasion a few miles away. All 4 were armed and shot up his house when he refused to unlock his door. They are still at large and local LEO's are on the hunt. Fortunately I'm a very active shooter and armed to the teeth so it would be a crooks or crook's BAD DAY to pull in my drive. It would also be a good time to put some tannerite in their car and play shoot the orange jar. LOL!!!!

Because I can't always give the crooks a scheduled appointment to wait in the lobby for the time I will be carrying. There are still 4 criminals on the loose in the area, and last year there was a guy who murdered 2 people and had to be tracked with dogs and helicopter just a 1/2 mile from my house hiding in the woods. :pistols:

I also carry a pocket knife and the pistol is another tool I always carry.

Looks like it's going to be late today before I get back in the shop. :(

I do the same thing, I always have mine within reach whether I'm inside or out in the garage... no matter how nice of an area you live in you never know when a criminal will pop up... its better to have it and not need it then to need it and not have it in my opinion

Not to Hijack the thread but its actually the law here in Kennesaw.

We like our safe community! Rick good luck with the project

Gun Ownership - It's The
Law In Kennesaw

By Jonathan Hamilton and David Burch

Marietta Daily Journal Staff Writers

KENNESAW, Ga - Several Kennesaw officials attribute a drop in crime in the city over the past two decades to a law that requires residents to have a gun in the house. In 1982, the Kennesaw City Council unanimously passed a law requiring heads of households to own at least one firearm with ammunition. The ordinance states the gun law is needed to "protect the safety, security and general welfare of the city and its inhabitants." Then-councilman J.O. Stephenson said after the ordinance was passed, everyone "went crazy." "People all over the country said there would be shootings in the street and violence in homes," he said. "Of course, that wasn't the case." In fact, according to Stephenson, it caused the crime rate in the city to plunge. Kennesaw Historical Society president Robert Jones said following the law's passage, the crime rate dropped 89 percent in the city, compared to the modest 10 percent drop statewide. "It did drop after it was passed," he said. "After it initially dropped, it has stayed at the same low level for the past 16 years." Mayor Leonard Church was not in office when the law was passed, but he said he is a staunch supporter of it. "You can't argue with the fact that Kennesaw has the lowest crime rate of any city our size in the country," said Church, who owns a denture-making company in Kennesaw.

UPdate.... I didn't get much done today cause of taking care of my parents. BUT, this afternoon I did drill the mounting holes for the new air dam and mounted it. Pulled horns off for their new mounting place, drilled and mounted the IAT sensor in new location. Installed new colder range sparkplugs(gaped .035) per instructions.

I had to pull the C4 out of the garage and dust it off, washed it, aired up the tires, checked the fluid levels and drove it while my C5 is being upgraded. Man, life is good!
Tomorrow begins a full day of wrenching.

Order that Alkey Meth setup Rick before your tune. You will gain 50-75hp and your IATs will be way cooler to help make your motor last in the Texas heat! Don't get cheap, DO IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

$600 for a Meth kit VS. New motor?.................................. ......What would you choose?

Today's work...

Installed the spacers on the lower radiator support....

Repaired the broken nipple I screwed up....

https://fbcdn-sphotos-h-a.akamaihd.n...26410347_n.jpg

Also cleaned up the radiators so they cool better.

V3 is in place and it's getting closer to being finished.

https://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphot...33000696_n.jpg

This is a problem I found trying to install the V3, a tab of some sort sticking up on the thermostat housing.....I'm going to grind it off tomorrow. Too wore out to do more today.

Keeeeeeep going! Don't stop!

You did get thee most difficult part done and out of the way, the Crank Pinning! :yesnod:

Just make sure that when you get to installing the INJECTORS you "WAIT" to have that done at the shop - your PCM is not scaled to run on the larger injectors! :nono:

Keep us posted on the results!

Did you get or are you going to do new valve springs or do you have aftermarket heads?

Thanks,Matt

I bought new PAC Beehive springs a couple of years ago when I did the headwork. :yesnod:

Unsure about the cover people get but I wish I wouldn't have been in denial and purchased the later model power steering bracket like the instructions highly recommend... I got by with my oem 2000 bracket for about 3 months, then during aggressive driving the bracket snapped right at the idler mount, tossing the belt, causing an overheat , and rendering the car non operational. Thought I could be one of those that slip by on luck. lol

Yes it is heat. Read earlier in the thread. There are a bunch of juvenile Supercharger banditos in the Lone Start State.

Thanks for the warning.....I'll get one before I'm done with this.

After fighting this belt getting it on...I don't want to do it again if the bracket fails.

not sure if this will work on an a&a kit but ecs sells a fixed idler so you don't have to replace the whole bracket... basically you cut off part of the bracket and the idler bolts on using the existing bracket hole and the 2 lower waterpump bolts... that might be another option to look into

Todays progress...

Cut out the radiator relief for the piping...pretty easy.

Here's the belt.....yep it's behind the stuff put there so you can't get to it....go figure? The most cursing happens here..... I've shouted all sorts of words here.

https://fbcdn-sphotos-e-a.akamaihd.n...64928792_n.jpg

Here is the intercooler shroud you have to install....fairly easy.

https://fbcdn-sphotos-g-a.akamaihd.n...07365583_n.jpg

Look at this mess of hoses and tubing, it's not very clearly noted in the instructions on which hose is which......definitely could be better illustrated and match the part numbers to the instructions.
