C6 as a DD?

Hey fella's...been on the forum for a bit but think this is my post. While I was deployed I've entertained the idea of trading my 2008 Duramax for a built C6 or modded ZO6 depending on price. I want to know how many of you daily drive your cars and what your thoughts on them are? I had a '00 Camaro SS built to the hilt and it wasn't a good daily driver but my commute is 12 miles round trip to work mostly interstate. For the winter I'd have to find a cheap mode of transportation but I'd probably sell my Harley so I could have a nice truck and car. Just wanted to get opinions before I posted my WTT thread. Thanks! :flag:

Ryan5508 06-14-2013 05:40 PM

Using my 2012 GS as a daily driver without issue. As long as you watch out on your approach to a driveway, etc your fine. It has great all around view for traffic. Much better then my 350z. The main downside is you feel like you need to be extra defensive about where you park. To many people don't care about there own car let alone yours.

DigitalWidgets 06-14-2013 05:41 PM

I DD mine everyday. Love it. And I've even started autocrossing it on the weekends. 2011 GS with 40K miles on it so far. It's still in great shape.

scnhra 06-14-2013 05:42 PM

:iagree:

What he said.

Dado5 06-14-2013 05:49 PM

I dd my 2012 GS. i even park at BART (train) station every day when i go to work.
I dont drive much, around 6 to 7k miles a year

capehorn3 06-14-2013 05:51 PM

DD my 2010 coupe and also my '97 C5 before it, why wouldn't you? Where do you live, need a Duramax to get to work? Don't build it up so much, you'll love it!

Jimmy52 06-14-2013 05:51 PM

Why buy them if your not going drive them right? DD here everyday.

I scrape everyday on the way out of my driveway and back in...plus multiple scrapes in the work parking structure. Doing the math over the almost 3 years I've had the car yields at least 1500 scrapes. The bottom of the splitter is a little bit chewed up (and I did incur a bit of damage hitting something once), but it seems like an easily replaceable part down the road. Either way, it's not something anybody notices and the rest of the car is in great shape.

I guess if we're sharing damage, I've found on my GS I get the most rock chip damage to the paint on the bottom of the mirrors and right around the rear brake cooling ducts. I hear people putting clear bras over the nose, but my nose has absolutely no rock chip type damage at all (knock wood!). For the rock chips that I get, I just touch them up with a paint pen every 6 months or so. I know they're there, but you can't see the repairs at all.

ls1121 06-14-2013 05:54 PM

I DD my 2008 and it scrapes every time I come out of the driveway. It doesn't matter at which angle I try it still scrapes. When I scrape off the air dam I will buy a new one. i bought this car to drive it and that's what I am going to do. If I just wanted to look at it i would have bought a picture of a Corvette lmao.

2011 GS M6
8500 miles

I store my car in the winter. During the eight months I drive it, it's my daily driver. Other than scraping, it's a great DD. Gas mileage sucks around town, but you make up for it on the highway. I recommend using yours as a daily driver. It's only a car, no matter how nice. Drive it like you stole it.

Supersonic 427 06-14-2013 07:07 PM

My '12 C6 Coupe is a Daily Driver and is infact, my one and only car. This is my first Corvette that I have used as such. Previous Vettes were used up North 6 months of the year and were for the most part a weekend toy when the weather was nice. Being retired now and living in the South, I had a change of heart. I use it for both fun and transportation rain or shine.

Vette_DD 06-14-2013 07:12 PM

My 012 coupe is my DD, although my wife has an 011 equinox that I drive occasionally for family events. I do put about 7K to 8K a year on my DD, both around town and on the interstate. It's driven about 8 to 10 times a week. It is our only vehicle, besides my wife's car.

jdk541 06-14-2013 07:16 PM

My car is a DD but it is only a coupe. I have heard that the Z06 is not as user friendly as a DD, but one day I sure as hell hope to find out. :D:D

As mentioned previously this is an awesome car and built to be driven. Why not have fun? The only negative issue have I have experienced with the Corvette is that I have more issue when over-taking another vehicle of being side-swiped. It has yet to happen, but because it sits so much lower than most vehicles I guess people changing lanes just don't see you very well.

Arizona probably has more than the average share of crappy drivers so I know that is part of it, but that is the only thing I have run into driving my Corvette every day.

akriggm 06-14-2013 07:46 PM

My 2008 C6 coupe makes a great DD (even through Michigan Winters w/proper tires). I really don't want to commute in anything else at this point; C6 seat time is a treat - even when the weather isn't!!
Enjoy,
akriggm

JDM555 06-14-2013 07:56 PM

I just got my C6 and it's my DD as well. Use to DD a 350Z. This is a lot more car than the 350Z. It feels much more solid and wider. It's smooth on the highway and pretty comfortable on the roads. Highway mpg is around 30. I agree on the parking thing, always worry with parking it lol.

But other than that, it's fun to drive and I think it's worth it, just give it a shot and you won't want to not drive it everyday.

saplumr 06-14-2013 08:00 PM

While I like the Vette, I'd hate to think I had to drive it every day!

C3-PO 06-14-2013 08:11 PM

go 4 it ...

:iagree: i drive 4-5 miles one way on the back roads to work, loads of fun! everyday. even let the wife drive to shopping on weekends. it warm enough now to run with the top down on the vert.

I don't have to drive it everyday, I get to drive it everyday. That's my way at looking at it.

Angelo C6 06-14-2013 09:05 PM

Daily driven since 05 except for December - March. Canada eh!

Car sees an hour a day on the highway and the drag strip a couple of times a year. No problems. 100,000 kilometers (60k miles) and still on original brakes.

Mad*Max 06-14-2013 09:06 PM

it is great as a DD - easy to drive and comfortable at the same time and of course good on gas

Woodstoc 06-14-2013 09:12 PM

Corvettes have been my daily drivers for the past 30 years...that should say it all. My new 2004 was one for 145000 miles. My latest baby, a brand new 2012 GS is one also. I've had it three months and have 6K on it already.

NospdLimit 06-14-2013 09:19 PM

I wouldn't want to drive mine to work everyday, to many morons backing into cars in our parking lot not to mention people opening doors into the car next to them.
Some parking lots are not Corvette friendly.

:iagree: Plus, if you plan on DD, make sure you budget for new tires more often and more maintenance costs that arise with a DD.

Carsonvette 06-14-2013 09:33 PM

12000 DD miles for my 2012 Coupe in the first year. Now it stays at home only when I bicycle to work. They are truly a joy to drive everyday.

JerriVette 06-14-2013 09:55 PM

I daily drive my 2008 c6 everyday here in the northeast.great vehicle. I recommend a stock or near stock vehicle for a daily driver. 10 to 12 k miles a year for a total right now over 60 k miles.

I would mention my last car was a built z06 with cam, headers and gears and as weekend toy. When I made it my daily driver it was a bitch to keep running right. Hence my suggest for very very light mods on a c6 or z06.

Get the z06 stock if you want more performance than the 190 mph base coupe.

Around 29 grand for ls3 z51 coupe and 40 for a z06.

Good luck

Jmo

bigblock427 06-14-2013 10:18 PM

I am on my fourth Vette (see below signature), and they have all been my daily driver. In 16 years I have put a total of 220,000 miles on my daily drivers. I can't imagine not getting to drive it every day.

Mr.Nubain 06-14-2013 11:00 PM

I have a Taurus I DD, my C6 gets weekend duty when it's nice. Driving a stick to me is a pain in the a$$ so I'm good with driving it here and there. The Taurus is easier to drive plus I don't have to be so careful. If I drove my vette everyday I'd get sick of it fast.

EvanZR1 06-14-2013 11:20 PM

I've daily driven a 92, an 01 Z06, a 91 ZR-1 andan 03 vert. While I won't be driving my new '13 GS every day, I will drive it every day that's nice. It is by far a better daily driver car than any of the previous Vettes.

Parking anxiety:ack:
Careful on drive ways, speed bumps, front cement curbs that can also damage radiator supports and take out front plate, side cement curbs for curb rash.
We have the crappiest roads here so with these low profile tires you have to be careful of wheel damage/bent rims.
Just can't hit those bumps on the road hard that you can't see like on a regular car or higher profile muscle/pony car.:ack:

rcooper 06-14-2013 11:27 PM

I've had 9 Vettes and they have all been DDs. An 09 z51 base coupe now with 55,000 on it and " I GET to drive a Corvette!!!" Enjoy the car!

:iagree: But the Republik of Kalifornia is probably the worst.
DRL's may help to be seen but have to be careful of road debris, rock chips on body and windshield since Corvette is alot lower. I have seen anything and everything from building materials, plywood, sheet rock, furniture to the kitchen sink on freeways.

The C6 is a great DD as I've used mine for 7 years now. It is also excellent on long trips with 10-20 hour stretches doable. The key, I believe as you also experienced, is to not over-mod the car -- or any car. The closer you get to a racer (or waxer for that matter) the less practical and enjoyable it is to drive -- both for you and a significant other.

You can find really nice C6s for $25-40k and Z06s for $45-60k. You like fast cars, get a Z06 and don't mess with it too much. If you hate the idea of shifting in traffic get the A6. There really aren't any bad choices.

3rd 'Vette here. 1st was a C3 ... hated it, girls loved it .. that was important then. 2nd was a '07 C6, loved it and drove it every single day. 3rd is a '12 C6 and drive it a lot, almost daily. The golf cart gets more action on the shorter trips. But I have never had any issues about 'Vettes as DD's. All 3 bought new, warranties are most important to me. Buy 'em, drive 'em.

Adam_W 06-15-2013 05:31 PM

I'm daily driving mine, only 8 miles round trip per day.

Honestly,
1) anxiety about where to park in the lot, i.e. parking further away or hunting for a good spot, is a pain for me.

2) anxiety about keeping it looking pretty - when you daily drive it - is a bit of a pain, but my car is black and I like to keep it shiny.

3) it's aggravating driving a fast car slow, i.e. when you are in a line of cars and trudging along at 20 mph in stop and go.

For daily driving the route that I drive, I enjoyed my Miata a lot more, I felt I was a nimble rabbit racing around corners rather than a caged beast restrained.

ChiefC 06-15-2013 05:49 PM

Drove my 99 C5 for 150,000 as a daily driver, then bought a 2012 in November as a daily driver. Living in Arizona I wouldn't want anything else.

My biggest regret is not putting on front splash guards (APSIS) right away. My GS has plenty of road rash around the rear brake cooling ducts. I have some Dr. Color Chip I'll be using on them soon.

My C5 Z06 was my DD up to 130k miles. No issues other than wear items. My base C6 is as well. 7k miles first 6 months. Been in snow rain you name it. If not for a harmonic balancer failure it would have been perfect.

kedar 06-16-2013 04:14 PM

I daily drive my vette in Chicago. Have a wheel / winter tire combo that goes on in November and comes off in March. In 2012 there were only two days I did not drive my car as a result of weather.

Amen - bro! The only time mine isn't on the road is if there's snow, because it's pretty much uncontrollable. But we have an AWD Caddy CTS and a Jeep Cherokee to compensate. And snow doesn't happen very often here, so I can count on my fingers the days the 'vette hasn't been on the road this winter.

Nice! I only have 22k on my 2011 that I bought in October 2011. In my defense, I only live 11 miles from work. Most of my mileage is cruises and going to meets.

I daily drive an A&A supercharged C6. 607rwhp and 535rwtq. It's fine for a daily driver since I kept the stock cam. You could even put a mild cam in a supercharged car and it will behave fine for daily driving. I wouldn't recommend a nasty NA car with a huge cam. That gets annoying.
