Cam results [UPDATE WITH NEW GAS & TUNE]

2008 Z06
Airaid intake&filter
Ported Throttle Body
LPE GT-19 cam
227,239 114lsa
.678, .688 lift

Everything else is stock.

Got the above done while the heads were getting SS exhaust valves and bronze guides (WCCH). No porting on the heads.

All work done by 21st Century Muscle Cars in DFW. They are awesome to work with. A awesome shop and great guys.

Unfortunately, as I drove to the shop, the only gas station I found was a 7-11, so I filled my tank with their 93 octane. The tuner said it was giving him some trouble with the tune so if I run through a few tanks of my usual Shell 93, then he will tune it again and can probably pull a bit more power.

The cam is great. I drove 50 miles through stop and go traffic on my way home from the shop. I had no problems with surge whatsoever. I was driving at 55mph in 6th gear with no problem at all.

I wasn't able to get any room to give it a good pull but it felt strong when I could push it a bit.

The car shakes a bit and there's a bit of a chop but I kinda like it.

Here's the dyno:

That's plenty of power for me. My main concerned was to get the valves worked so I can finally stop thinking about that dang topic.

************** UPDATE ****************

I got rid of the gas and filled up with Shell 93. The tuner said he was able to apply a bit more timing today. Here's the dyno:

http://forums.corvetteforum.com/memb...une-145894.jpg

I know the dyno does SAE correction, but it was already 90 degrees in the shop and 60% humidity.

I am pleased that the gains were spread across most of the rpm range.

I have to give compliments to the 21st Century guys, especially Matt, for all their effort to get me the best possible tune.

Congrats on the upgrade! I would have kept driving until I found some room to give it a good pull, but that is just me.

Even with the stock exhaust a sound clip would be nice! How does the drive train sound with the WCCH upgrade? :flag:

Interesting that your tuner believes he can tune it better with Shell 93 as opposed to 7-11 93. I like shake and chop.

Thanks!

The valve train is noticeably louder now. I'm not sure how much of that has to do with the cam or the SS valves. At times it sounds like a old mechanical typewriter. In my head I am imagining those valves banging up and down and I can hear each tick as they close. I don't mind, but it is noticeable.

The idle is a lot louder now. With the exhaust open its really loud in the cabin at idle. Perhaps because the idle is around 850rpms now.

I'll get a video of the sound tomorrow.

Thanks!

Nice! Is that with stock exhaust, or headers etc?

pokerpro 06-08-2013 01:29 PM

Not really sure if I'm buying into the fact that your tuner thinks 7-11 gas in no good.

Pretty sure that corp buy's their gas from mobil/exxon, shell, chevron, ect.

They have such a high turn over rate that the gas is never sitting in those tanks in the ground very long.

I always use 93 octane from the race track station close to me and one day a tanker was there delivering when I was there. So i asked the driver (who was an owner operator) were the gas came from and he said he picks up from a mobil refinerey and delivers to race track, 7-11, & costco.

Hope this helps.

Ya stock exhaust and headers, wondering what I'd put down with headers though?

RamAir972003 06-08-2013 04:08 PM

Well Matt is a Very good tuner and here in Texas its known for gas stations to have bad gas. Im curious on the drivability I did the gt-20 cam. Achilles call me would like to feel the car 972-824-0793.

Nice results. Over 500rwhp is plenty fast.

My wife and I just took a long cruise to burn off some gas. I had a nice stretch of empty highway (we went all the way to Mexico) so I did a 2nd to 4th pull and it felt great. Very strong all the way to 7,000 and sounded awesome. It really comes alive when the rpms get up there.

I'm going to check with the tuner about bringing it in next weekend for a follow-up tune after I get some good gas cycled through. He is a stand-up guy and I have absolute confidence in what he says, and he is going to take his time and effort to tune it again at no additional charge. Really, the 21st Century shop is awesome. Not only do they know their stuff, they are top-notch in customer service as well.

Nice! Now you need to come to the track with me so we can race. If you had drag radials, it would be a close race.

Update in original post....

I want to ride in your car and see the difference between our cams...

The increased noise It's pretty normal especially with a cam and heavier/stronger springs and valves. I left the stock cam in my car, and the upgraded WCCH heads like you did, and I do have headers and its is a good deal louder so I can imagine you guys that cam the car its probably louder too even with stock manifolds

Congrats on your new set up
