Shifter has play after Clutch install

My shifter has a lot of side to side play in it even while in gear, and it's hard to get into second at times. It just feels loose and muddy for lack of a better term. Its a 2001 Z06. Never did this before. I just had a shop install a Mcleod twin disc RST so the clutch is not the issue. I am thinking maybe the shift linkage from the shifter in the console itself may be loose. Anyone that can point me in the right direction I would greatly appreciate it. I did a search, but got nothing that can help my exact situation. Thanks in advance guys.

And before someone says take it back to the shop, they are a little ways away and if it's an easy fix I'd prefer to do it myself instead of drive all the way to Daytona.

Shaft to shifter is loose! Have to make sure the torks is very tight!

So it's fairly easy fix?

Yes have to pull the console out to gain access but not really a big deal. Should be the problem!

Another quick question... Is there a link with pictures? I know how to get the console off but want to make sure I tighten the right bolts up.

I don't have any but once you get console off unbolt 4 10mm nuts to shifter boot and lift it up. Should see shaft to shifter flopping around towards rear of opening!

This was exactly the problem, it works great now. Thanks!

Ugh, here we go again. I got on the highway yesterday and noticed that it's tough to get into 6th now instead of 2nd. 2nd still sometimes is tough too, about 5% of the time. Is there a way to align the shifter back to stock specs? Like I said before there were no issues what so ever with shifting before I had the clutch install. Is there some way to measure where dead center is on the shifter? I know that it's causing the problem, my transmission only has 30 ish thousand miles on it and has never been abused. I may change the fluid too, would going to synthetic trans fluid help the longevity of it at all?
