Prom Night 2013

Last night was our youngest daughter's senior Prom. This is the first year for our Vette but NOT the first time I let my kids drive my sports cars. My sons took the Plymouth Prowler I had until this year to their Proms and Homecomings as well as used it for nights out with their friends. My daughter did as well. A lot of good memories for them and me and my wife.

I know a lot of folks on car forums say they'll never let their kids, wives, husbands, friends drive their special vehicle, but to me it's sharing the joy that makes owning a car like this even more fun. And when years from now they tell the stories of their Prom, Homecoming, dates spent in the vette or Prowler, it will take on a whole new dimension for the memory. I never had a single issue or problem with them in the cars and never regretted letting them drive them. Even their friends occasionally got to drive them, again with never a problem.

:iagree:

I believe in letting my son-in-laws and my daughter drive my vette....it is gratifying seeing the big smiles on their faces....in fact, on of my son-in-laws bought a 2012 GS vert for his own....I'm sure my grandson will be driving it in later years......

That's what I call a good dad. They all look great in the pictures. Thanks for sharing.

there is no doubt in my mind that as soon as they were out of sight, the boy was pestering your young lady to give it up.....the key fob that is, so he could drive!!!

Torchsport 05-12-2013 05:27 PM

Wow. That's a lot of power for a teenager.

That's awesome of you to give them that special gift. Great dad move.

joec 05-12-2013 05:49 PM

As long as they respect what the car can do to them or someone else while driving... Why not??? Very cool thing to do and make their evening/prom.......

AORoads 05-12-2013 05:52 PM

Glad to see the smiling faces! after all, who wouldn't be?

Good Dad! I agree with letting people drive the car. Almost every one of my friends and family have driven mine.

Sure is more memorable than renting a limousine.

You don't think a proud daddy took this into account prior to suggesting that his daughter take his Corvette????

This is just out of pure curiosity but would you still hand over the keys if you had a Z06/ZR1?

Absolutely, wouldn't make any difference to me at all. I've had too many friends give me keys to far more expensive cars then my Vert...I wouldn't feel right not letting them drive it if they would like. Most everyone is very timid in it anyway.

Great job Dad

Both these young people will never forget the night, including taking "the Vette" to Prom.

Good for you !!!

We don't have children, so it's easy for me to REALLY enjoy reading this, but I think back to my Prom and I wasn't quite so fortunate...... of course, I'm older than I care to remember. I think my Dad offered to drive me and my date to a nice restaurant and act like our driver..... go figure

z51vett 05-12-2013 08:11 PM

My daugthers drove their z/28s and my grandnational ,vett, monte carlo ss's and impala ss's to school proms and homecoming.

I actually rented a c4 for my prom, I drove it very responsibly. I was probably the only sober person that night, I wanted to be able to drive the car, and be ready to drive it. In the end, the vette led to me being the most responsible person at the prom.

 Depends on the kid if they can handle the temptation of all that power. One of my best friends growing up used to get to drive his dads Viper and Vette all the time. It wasn't uncommon to see him out cruising around town in one of them. He never raced it or dogged the cars. In fact the only time he did is when his dad was with him encouraging him.

Rossi6998 05-12-2013 09:27 PM

Very nice.... She looks very responsible. Glad everything worked out well...

I bet you were nervous.look like great kids a lifetime of memories for them.pretty car

plmkrzy 05-12-2013 09:36 PM

You did a really great thing for the kids and I'm sure they will remember it for a lifetime. Congratulations to you for what you did and the feelings you have for the kids. My children can have any of my cars whenever they want and they can use them for whatever. They are only yours (the kids) for a short time in your lifespan, and a car can always be replaced. Children are the most important thing in this life. :yesnod::yesnod::thumbs::thumbs:

Yes, my daughter has proven she's a good and responsible driver. If this had not been the case then I wouldn't have handed over the keys.

Actually not nervous at all. My wife and I went to a movie and never thought about it more than a second or two. I knew the car was in good hands.

Truer words were never spoken. Here's our oldest son at his senior prom four years ago in my Prowler.

Four years later (last June) he died from a swimming accident. He loved the car and respected it. We had great memories together in it and I know he appreciated the trust I put in him letting him drive it.

Her poor date probably wanted to drive so bad!

brooklync5 05-12-2013 10:12 PM

Sorry for your loss....

Zap City 05-12-2013 10:23 PM

Very cool thread. Nice counterpart to all the guys that post on here about how it's crazy to let your kids drive your cars. My dad let me drive his all the time growing up and it motivated me to get my own. Way to go for sure.

01VETTECOP 05-13-2013 06:11 AM

Your a Cool Dad !

ALLEN007 05-13-2013 06:22 AM

Memories are what it's all about! I would have let my daughter drive mine in a heartbeat if not for the two wrecks she had when she was 16. She's 19 now but insurance is too high to take a chance.

TLS_Addict 05-13-2013 11:03 AM

I think its great that some kids can be trusted. Most I dont think can.

There are many ways. PM me for details.

I was 19 when I had my first C4.
