Recommend rebuilding calipers?
C5 cp -78K - I am 4th owner - have put about 8K miles on it - couple of track days - lots of fun in mountain twisties. While I am changing out rotors/pads/hoses etc - would rebuilding the calipers be recommended or unnecessary? The car started life in FLA, went to Colorado for several years and is now in VA - for a while.
Rebuild kits run about $29 per caliper ( F & R) - There have been no brake problems I know of - just thinking preventive maint. Thx |
rebuilding is good because it lets you look at the condition of the bores to be sure no corrosion problems will pop up
that will be fine for normal street driving with street grade pads but, if you are going to track the car, be aware that caliper "spread" is an issue that will cause abnormal pad wear and decrease the life of your pads -- tapering wear patterns so for a lot of aggressive use, going new isn't a lot of money and you know what you have I'd go new calipers (not rebuilt powder coated, but new GM) and with new braided hoses -- your rubber hoses are 10 years old probably a lot of info on the autocross/road race part of the forum on the spread issue |
Thanks a bunch - I will start shopping now
