Dealerships ?????????

OK, I get a little bit interested in a 2013, 60th Anniversary 427 convertible. I like just about everything on the car, but I go to the trade in value for my 2003 %0th. Anniversary coupe. My car has 16.549 miles on it and they come back with a black book value of $12K to $17.950 ?

So I ask the salesmen, "How exactly do you come up with this , these values? I ask because if you think this car is worth $17K your still $14K away from any price I'd accept. I'm not crazy, and look at the car, You could shave off the quarter panel gloss!" So he heads in and I said I wasn't hanging around so you guys can play musical chairs with the sales manger you can forget it. I'm not playing that game. This 2003 is worth $30.000, Period. If you can't see that, fine. I was heading to my Vette and as I got in the salesmen is still trying to get me to come back in. I told him to call if their magic crystal ball starts to warm up to my $30K price tag. I just went out for a nice drive and sure enough, I get home and the sales manager left a message asking me to come back and they WANT to put me in a 2013 60th. Anniversary convertible 427 ?

Do you think I should go back ? . . . To be continued !

Don't take this the wrong way, but in no way is a 2003 Corvette worth $30,000 at a dealership. But I would still go back and talk to them. For a dealer trade it might grab mid-20's, a private sale with the right person you might get the $30k you are looking for.

That being said, I would still go back and talk to them, as most dealers are going to be sitting on their 2013's and you might want to wait until May 1st to see if any new incentives come out on the car.

They could give you $20 for your car, just have them come down another $10k off the 427 best offer and then it's a wash.

Good Luck and let us know what happens.

If you re buying brand new, it is a little harder for them to adjust prices of what you are buying to offset what they have to give you for yours as the price is right there on the Mulrony sticker!!!

Be careful though!!!!! I sold cars for a very little while and just could not get right with just how dishonest and usury the standard dealership protocol is!!!!!!! I actually had one salesman tell me that if he had what he thought was a solid customer, he would automatically add $5,000 to the price!!!!! I know this because I found out later that this was exactly what my salesman had done to me at the same dealership on my first '99!!!!! I wanted to start my own jihad and burn the place down when I figured it out!!!!!!!!!!! My car went from $23,000 to $28,000 right there on the lot!!! I almost walked away when he told me that he was sorry, but that he had accidentally mis-quoted me the original price. I still don't know just why I didn't!!! It definitely figured into the size of my payments and the fact that I had to finally let the car go later to get out from under it!!!! I did love the car though.

Just don't take any crap though as the C7 is about to go on sale in August and C6's weren't all that more popular than C5's anyway.

Get what you want and stick it to the crooked bastiches!!!!!! Other than that, just walk away with a smile on your face and enjoy that fine 50th A/E!!!!!!!!

Just my thoughts,
DSTURBD

30G's???? Call me an a-hole if you want, but you'd be LUCKY to see 20K. Let alone anything north of that.

Just so you can see that you're the one thats out of line here, go to another dealer and ask what they'd give you to buy it outright. Or better yet, swing by a Carmax if you have them in your area. They're usually a few bucks more than everyone else anyway. I think you'll find that everyone would be in the teens for your car.

Not that it's not a nice car, but $30,000 is outright dreaming.

Suthunman 04-27-2013 10:24 PM

They have seen your car and know what you want to buy. You don't have to go back to get their lowest price, they can give it to you over the phone. Experience tells them if they can get you there looking at that new Vert you will pay more because of the emotional factor. Just call him up and tell him he has one shot at this and all you need to know is how much money and your car will it take to do the deal. It's that simple.

OK, yeah I see your point. I was sticking to my guns if for no other reason than I know they are trying to unload the 2013, and yeah, I'd take $5K off my price if your going to work on the other side of the final price of the 2013 Corvette. I won't try to say I'm not anxious at getting a nice new 2013 427 60th package convertible Corvette. But I don't want to get pulled into their games. When I bought my 2003, I paid $49.900 for my 1SC coupe. I've treated this car like it was one of my kids. It has a few mods, nothing over done. But Ya know I have a ton of sweat equity in my 2003. But I never feel good with these salesmen and general mangers type back and forth games. then if you get pissed and want to get out they pin you down and start again.

It took 4 hours when I bought my 2003. It wasn't till we were pretty much though and I said I wanted the 1SC package which dumped another $5k on to the price. I never feel very good through these negations. It's just something I don't do well. I don't know, I'll think about over the weekend and maybe I'll go back and get a soda and listen to what they have to pitch. It just makes me uncomfortable with the games like dealing. If they were going to go $25K on my can and then work out the final price at say $20K, I could live with that. I think that a fair deal. but . . .

olbear1962 04-27-2013 10:39 PM

Good luck with your negotiations, pls post what you ended up doing, we are interested!

... B-U-T you say??? $20k for a low mileage, slightly modded and pampered 50th AE ??? No way man. How about selling it privately? To hell with the dealer.

killain 04-27-2013 10:41 PM

Ok and sure, but. . . .

Not that your insane, but I'm not going to clothesline myself by saying I'll be glad to get $15K for my car please, Just like the other post, dealerships are pros at draining your ability at nailing down a final, real, I can live with price. I bought my 2003 on the hottest day in August that year, That alone was a big mistake. Your hot and knocking down the bottles of water, and their badgering you with the general manager good cop / bad cop deal. And your 100% right, if it's too tough to work out a fair deal, just get up and go home.

Vetteman Jack 04-27-2013 10:46 PM

Your car looks and sounds like a very, very nice '03, but I just don't see the dealer giving you $30K for it - sorry, but no way I would pay that kind of money for one. But someone out there may give you a lot more than you would get by trading it in - sell it privately if you can.

What is the sticker price on the 2013 427 vert? To do the deal like you want ($25K for yours, $20K difference for the new one), I would be very surprised, more like shocked. If you can get it done, please tell us what dealer this is. Best of luck to you - the 427 verts are beautiful cars.

jdot 04-28-2013 12:11 AM

VJ beat me to it. What dealer is this?

bladex10 04-28-2013 12:18 AM

You wont get anywhere close to $30k at a dealership. Ill assure you that. If you want to get top dollar, youll have to put it on the market and sit on it for awhile looking for that 1 person. The dealership itself will probably put the car out for $22k, if even that. Its a weird time right now where they are marking down C6s to make room for C7s. C5's are kind of worthless at the moment.

ZEE-OH-6 04-28-2013 12:37 AM

Your car is only worth $18K - $20K on the street .... if you think you can get more you are just kidding yourself. I have a pristine 2004 Z06 with 19,000 miles on the clock and I would be lucky to get $24K in today's economy with the C7 coming out soon.

Choreo 04-28-2013 12:44 AM

If that were my car I would not even consider a trade with a Dealer, they will never give you what your car is worth.

Virtual Geezer 04-28-2013 03:04 AM

In the end, IMHO, it's all about the final number to trade, and no matter what, you're looking at big money.

I'm wondering how much wiggle room the dealer has in the 427. One dealer here has one with MSRP $89,500 and is advertising just a 5K discount to $84.5 -- it's still on the showroom floor. But another dealership offered a 427 vert at $71,000 -- its MSRP was $83K+. That vert has been sold.

Maybe you can wait until the C7 debuts. Depreciation is a cruel mistress. A dealer here has a new 2012 4LT Grand Sport vert, original MSRP $78.1, now discounted to $63.2. Same dealer has an identically equipped used 2012 Grand Sport vert with 2700 miles for $58K. I've seen this car, and it is as new. Like I said, depreciation is a cruel mistress.

Finally, I'm sure your dealer would much rather have your car on the lot than that 427. Nice, low mile C5s sell quickly!

lechnoid 04-28-2013 04:42 AM

Go to the next closest dealership to you and play them off of each other. If it's a long drive, just pick up the phone. That will take the focus of their games off of you and put it on each other. Even if they barely make any money, they will get a nod from corporate for moving X amount of the anniversary editions. That and it's just fun to watch them play "The Price is Right" with you just to make sure the other guy doesn't get a sale. Usually by the end of it all, you'll come out on top.

DevilDog II 04-28-2013 07:50 AM

I think the only way you'll ever come close to $30,000 is selling it privately. My '98 is highly modded, looks like new, and only has 25,000 miles on the odometer. I doubt if I could get $30,000 for it. Dealers make most their money from used car sales and service, so I don't think you're going to get close to the money you want from them.

Work it to your advantage. Go in with your own financing pre-arranged. Be prepared to sell on your own [or possibly on consignment with a specialty shop] as the dealer will NEVER give you anywhere what you want. The salesman is not your friend and they dont call them stealerships for nothing. Most work on a '4 square' system [price, payment int rate and trade in] to enable them to make it look like they meet your goal-which for most sheeple is payment]make it clear you are a price buyer. Be a laydown ...youll accept their absurdly lowball TIV and high payment and interest rate if you get your price. Once you have a sales offer accepted with a Credit card deposit [to eliminate games with refunding it] go into the business office and yank the trade and pull your own financing. If they balk , make a public scence and the manager will handle it.
