New C3 owner, wondering about L84

1 Attachment(s)
Hello,

I am new here, and I am in the process of buying my very first 1979 C3. I've been talking to the owner about it, and I have pictures, and I believe it to be a L84.

I know the engine needs work, and I intend to do it, but I was wondering if by looking at it you can tell that it is indeed a L84. I can upload more pictures of the car if needed to make that determination.

Owning a stingray has been a dream of mine since I was a kind. And tomorrow, I will hopefully own one.

In 79, they had a L48 and a L82. You have the numbers mixed up. :D

No way to tell if that is a block from either without you looking at the stamp pad and looking up the suffix. Could be a truck or van motor.

It is located near the front of the passenger side valve cover. It will look like this (the suffix ie.CMR will tell you what block it is. Use a wet cloth not sandpaper to clean it if not visible):

Post what you find here. Someone will decode it for you. And just because the vin or title says one thing it does not mean the block was not changed. Good luck.

thanks for the info. If it is a CMR suffix, does that mean it's an L82?

Most likely a base L48 if its the original, I think the L82 came with aluminum valve covers. If i'm not mistaken an L82 would also have a change in the the Vin# 5th dig 8=L48 4=L82

I actually think the suffix for that year, and for an L82 is ZBB. If anyone knows for sure, let me know.

CMR is my 78 engine. It represents L82 4spd. 0420 means the engine was built on April 20.

In 79, they had zba & zbb for the L82.

There are 7 other codes for the L48.

Yup, CMR is the 220HP (L82) motor from a 78, 4 speed car. The 79's had 5 more HP.

Looks like an L48 judgeing by the plain corporate blue valve covers but the block number will tell all

The engine in your pic look like an L-48. Check the engine identification code for confirmation.
