Input from Boxster owners vs a C6
 

Hello all. After an almost 8 month hiatus, sold my Z to get us moved, I am jonesing for a play car again. I loved my Z but don't want to put up with the valve issues. I have owned both a C6 Z51 and the 2008 Z.

One car that has popped up on the radar is the new 981 Porsche boxster. It appears to be an interesting car and am investigating them. I know that folks on this forum will recommend the C6 (base model is what I am looking for, NOT a GS) but am curious to hear from folks who have owned a recent Boxster and a C6.

I can't compare a C6 vs a 981, but my parents have a 99 Boxster. Compared to the C5, you really have to get high into the revs to feel much power. It does handle better, probably due to its lower weight and center of gravity. For the current models, the real killer is the price. A well equipped Boxster S is nearing $80k (base price is over $60k for the S model). You can get into a nice 2013 3LT coupe for around $60k. Although the interior on the Porsche blows away the current Corvette, it lacks a noticeable 100 horsepower, and to me, the handling doesn't make up for it. Go for the Vette!

unless I'm wrong I don't believe the 'valve issue' went beyond '08 ?

Regardless, while I've not owned a Boxster but have driven friends 2010 'S' I can say it's alot of fun in the twisties (every bit as mush as a C6) but when asked to stretch it's legs in the open....all it will ever do is look at the dissapearing tailights of of any C6 / ZO-6 pulling away from it !

Both are truly excellent cars with totally different design approaches. I have had both a Boxster S, currently have the Vette. My neighbor just took delivery of the new Boxster S in which I got to spend some quality wheel time.

Other than the 4 tires and a steering wheel commonality, the C6 and new Boxster S are an apple and an orange.

A person could make an excellent ownership case for either - be very happy with either - as both have their individual appeal.

Try to make arrangements to drive both back to back - your emotions and instincts will tell you which fits you !!

I've had a boxster huge pos every Plastic piece inside if you touched it it broke and all work has to be down underneath. Also had Audi TT pos traded it in after 13 months. Had a 99 911 another pos junk plastic interior again. Had a new passat junk no more VW cars ever again. My 96 C4 twice the car. My 01 ls1 6spd vette smoked all the above in any category. My wife's Hyundai Sonata also better than any VW.

As I would expect it to.

The consensus (from the many valve-train threads in the Z06 section) appears to be that all model years
of the LS7 are affected, despite GM's statement that the issue is contained from '08 thru part of '11 MYs.

It was underpowered, even with upgraded headers, exhaust and flashed ecu. It cornered amazingly, but just too underpowered. I sounded great (at least mine did) and looked good. It was horribly uncomfortable and the ride was bad. IMHO there is no comparison between the two. The C6 is powered poperly, comfortable, and still corners well.

I have a ZR1 and a Porsche Cayman - which is basically a hard top Boxter. As others have said these cars are different and great in their own ways. On a tight twisty road the Cayman is more fun than the ZR1. The Cayman is amazingly quick and agile and has perfect balance. On the track and when you can actually use the power, nothing compares to the Corvette. I would say that around town, the Boxter would be the better choice, but if ultra-performance is your goal the Corvette gets the thumbs up. Bottom line is the Boxter is like a slower street legal go-kart and the Corvette feels big and heavy but when pushed hard, drives like a race car. So it all depends on what you're looking for.

What are you looking for? How often will you drive?

If I was driving to work and back and around town I'd probably take the Porsche...but I'd be afraid of maintenance and that high price...The Corvette can do the same but probably doesn't feel as nimble as a Boxter...hmm guess it depends on your circumstance. I am biased though so I say go American and get yourself a shiny red Corvette ;]

wish I could have a Zr1 and a 911.

I just purchased my new vette about a month ago and while at the dealer, a couple was there trading in their boxster for a vette. Funny thing is the husband didn't want to trade the car and the wife was saying she wanted the vette because she didn't really like the boxster. I listened as they went back and forth. I knew the decision was made when she looked at her husband and stated exactly, " I did not want the damn thing, you bought it without me knowing it and I don't drive the car - YOU DO ". Well needless to say, the car is sitting on the showroom floor as a trade in. Nice looking little car, but not my choice and neither was it HER choice. Buy the vette, I am partial. Sue me. But either choice you make, seriously will be a good choice. They are both fun in their own way.

New boxster s with pdk transmission is a nice sports car.

I really do like the brand new 911s with pdk as it's quick and it's got the little emergency rear seats which would come in handy on occasion but the 911s would be a minimum of around 100 grand. I priced it out and they go up higher and it just doesn't make sense...

To ask on a corvette forum is ridiculous but what the he'll...

I'd suggest a new c7 z51 if your shopping for the best.
