Tight 2 car garage...

I have a two car garage that houses a full size pickup and of course my C6.
Problem I have is that its a tight squeeze and while pulling the Vette in its hard to see if I am going to rub up against a tool box or storage rack that resides along the wall on the driver side of of the Vette, any suggestions on something I can use to either guide me in or a trick to keep me from hitting something while driving in.
Its hard to see that side and would hate to hear a CRUNCH!

Racer 01-25-2013 07:48 PM

Back in and use your mirrors.

jdt62 01-25-2013 07:50 PM

That's why I always back in. That way you can use the side mirror to see down the side of the car. I get within an inch or two of objects along the wall and never worry about scratching it.

I can not back in because then I wont be able to get out of the car...I pull the truck out which sits on the drivers side and then pull in and get out..if i backed I could not open door.

Park the pickup in the driveway. :hide:

Could you reverse them, park the Vette on the other side?

Thats what I do:cheers:

Let the wife pull in left side in her car.
I back the vette in on right side.

Get rid of all the stuff on each side also.(toolbox etc....)

Mount a boat dock bumper on wall to open door against and also shows you where to stop when backing in.

Pull truck in forward on right side of garage, pull vette in backward on left side of garage. So both car driver doors are middle of garage. My garage is normal width but not deep at all. I keep two motorcycles a CTSV and ZR1 in there no problem. Attached is a pick with the bike my old Z06 and my buddies C6.

Put a convex mirror in the garage. Look at the mirror as you are pulling in. It's the kind of mirror people put at the end of their driveways to see oncoming traffic.

incabird 01-25-2013 08:55 PM

Get some curb feelers?

pokerpro 01-25-2013 09:05 PM

Put on a pair of vertical (Lambo) doors then back in. Problem solved no charge, I'm here all week.

Wow...I love it!!! You must be an old...well, about my age. You probably remember the prism so you could see the traffic light beyond the sun visor...and necker knobs...

ncvette_1FUNRIDE 01-25-2013 09:11 PM

I have a garage that is not that big. I pull my Acura in on the left side and I back in the Vette on the right side. That way I can park them inches apart in the center and both driver's doors open towards each side wall. This leaves plenty of room for me to open the driver's doors all the way open.

Here is a photo but I park closer than this most of the time.

djohnson00 01-25-2013 09:16 PM

Cut pool noodles in half and put them on the walls (or tool box). My garage is tight as well so I cut a yoga mat in half and nailed them to each wall. No more banging my door on the hard wall when I get in and out

Tally Ho 01-25-2013 09:17 PM

I have a wide 2 car garage and still find it easier to back the Vettes in for more room. I have to pull the blue one out to load a passenger and unload before backing in. I can squeeze in the red one without bumping the door into my workbench.

Not that old, 55, but thought it would be funny. I do remember seeing them on cars as a kid.

I actually had the same issue with a tight garage and two vehicles. Our main garage is only a little over 16' wall to wall and I had a 2006 Dodge quad cab dually and a Honda Accord. I had to fold the mirrors in and then pull the truck as close to the left wall as possible and climb over the console and get out of the passenger side door. The Honda would be as close to the right wall as possible. The bad part was that the passenger had to get out first. This was not much fun when it was raining or snowing. When we got the Vette we had the three cars and only a two car gargage issue, so we built another garage in the back. Now we just park the DD Accord in the main garage and put the truck and Vette out back.

Hire a lawn service if you have lawn equipment. Sell your lawn equipment. Maybe you already did that.

NevadaVette 01-25-2013 11:54 PM

Drive each car in at a slight angle with the front pointed at an outside wall. Once you get the front in the rest will go.

Extra wide, extra deep 3 car garage. Double door on left, sink and wall mount vacuum on front wall, wife's Mercedes on left, my F250 in the center, Vette in single door on the right, cabinets and work bench in front, Kubota behind with seasonal attachments. Works great for me.

Parking guide

I have a sting hanging from the ceiling in my garage with a plastic weight at the bottom. I use it to center up my car and when it touches the windshield I stop. Works great.

As a second fail safe measure, I have a 2"x6" board on the floor to stop going in too far also.

pewter99 01-26-2013 06:58 AM

have a garage sale

SgtMajUSMC(Ret) 01-26-2013 07:07 AM

When we first got my wife her new Tahoe she could not get it parked correctly in the garage. Had to park at a slight angle so she could get in and out without tearing the side mirrors off.

I used a black magic marker and put a vertical line on the wall of the garage where the driver's side mirror needed to be lined up with that line while parked correctly as well as a vertical line on the front wall of the garage so that when she pulled into the garage, with the steering wheel straight at 1200 position she could put her index finger at that 1200 position and point it at that line on the wall as she was pulling into the garage. Pull forward until the mirror was lined up with the line on the side wall and it was a perfect park job every time. Simple, but effective every time and cheap as heck too!

I use a Laser parking system help guide me in and stop at the same point every time. I have used this system for nearly 10 years and its great:thumbs:

I have the laser adjusted so it runs down the center of my hood, and as i advance in the beam comes through the windshield and travels over the dash. Once the beam drops off the dash I stop.....perfectly every time :D

You can get these at various places...do a web search or try Amazon...they cost about $20 for a single and $30 for a double. The pic below is a double. as for me I have 2 singles.

I collapse the drivers side mirror which gives me a few more inches....works for me...and I have the smallest garage possible. Right side as I pull is is concrete wall and I haven't hit it yet (*keeping my fingers crossed....) I have also seen people hang a tennis ball as I guide....better to hit the tennis ball than anything else....good luck with that.

vig1116 01-26-2013 11:30 AM

get a couple of these.....

I pick a spot on the back wall and line it up with my head-up display speedo. I get it parked within half an inch of my intended spot every time.

Bingo. Bond a 2X4 along to the wall next to the tool box, if you get too far right you feel the tire trying to ride up over the 2X4.

Maybe try two dangly strings with soft plastic weights. The first one contacts the windshield to tell you that you're on center, the last one to tell you to stop. If soft, the first one to contact can just harmlessly get dragged over the car top.

Larry/car 01-26-2013 02:34 PM

The laser system is a great idea. Another idea is to fasten 2x3 eight foot studs to the floor that would guide you in. I have seen this used to guide airplanes into tight T hangars.

I use these in my garage.
They plug into a 110V wall socket but I wired mine into the Garage door opener's light socket so they only operate when the light is on.

Good man!! I poked a hole in a green tennis ball and hung it on a string to center the car up. And I just use four (regular) bricks on the floor to stop me from going to for. Is it possible that we're related? :leaving:

The ones I have have motion sensors and come on when needed and go off after about 1min. You can plug in with 110VAC or 4x AA batteries.

I use red & white fishing bobbers and hang it from my garage door opener. Truck is parked on side of driveway and my 2 Polaris's are in the garage with the Vette, plenty of room.

Duhhh.......after reading this thread, I now back in the Corvette on the left side and continue to drive the Jag in straight ahead on the right side. Plenty of room now to get to drivers seat in either car.

Just proves old dogs can learn new tricks!!! Thanks.

I don't have the same problem you do, but the solution may help. My kids used to door ding the crap out of my car when getting in and out of my wifes car, so I put up a DoorPal. Just Google it to check it out.

anchor a 1x1 wood to the floor. when ya feel the nudge you stop. or hang a ball on a rope from ceiling to hit the glass

richie15 01-30-2013 06:23 PM

One of the first things I did was go to my local glass company and order an 18" convex mirror that I mounted on the front wall of the garage. It shows you the clearance between the cars as you pull in. I also got a plug-in halogen motion light that I also mounted on the front wall. I directed it to shine in the area between the cars. Gives nice extra light where you need it and you don't have to get out in the rain, etc.to flip on the overhead lights. You can set the sensitivity and length of time it stays on also.

This is a year ago when I still had my C5. Garage was full of stuff on the passenger side and I had 2 inches in the front before I hit the Harley and maybe 3 inches in the back. I just made sure to drive in dead straight and had a brick and a piece of 2x10 on the floor. When I felt the tires hitting the brick& the board I knew that was it. My wifes side has even more stuff in it, plus I have one small out building for pool furniture and a 12X16 for the tractor, snowblower, and all the yard tools. Have a lot more room with the C6 now LOL...

An 8 car garage won’t work. I fully believe in the theory that the more space you have, the more junk you accumulate. I have a 3 car attached garage and a 28’ x 30’ detached garage. I can barely fit my Vette in the detached garage. :jester

I used to have a similar situation and found a low-tech solution. I parked in a "perfect" position and then hung a tennis ball from the garage ceiling to touch the winshield directly in front of the driver. I could pull in and align with the ball and just touch the windshield.

My cousin set-up a mirror on a bracket suspended from the ceiling that allowed him to see how close he is to the stuff in front of his car.

My current garage is not that tight, but I have put a mark on the wall that when i align with the line, i know that I have pulled forward enough.

BSE1956 01-30-2013 09:28 PM

I found the old tennis ball trick to work best for my wife. I just pierced an old tennis ball with a string and hung with an eye screw from the ceiling.
When she brings the center (little red light) of her windshield to it, she's lined up perfectly.
When it touches the windshield, she stops.
Takes a little doing to get it just right, but it take all the guesswork out.
edit: Oh wow, wrote this before I saw the post above...........sorry.
