Will this be equivalent to the Z51, or even better? Supercharged option??? It's nice to finally confirm that the Sting Ray is back however, I'm just trying to wrap my head around how they are going to market it. Is it standard or a option??Attachment 48377925

I've been told that it is not an 'option', the emblem will be displayed on all models

I assumed as much from this article today:

GM design chief Ed Welburn this week unfurled a poster on a table at his office in suburban Detroit showing images of the remodeled Corvette along with Stingrays from 1959 and 1963.

“I want this image on every kid’s wall,” he said in advance of the Jan. 13 unveiling of the new car on the eve of the North American International Auto Show in Detroit

Really? That seems a little off because from my understanding it was a option back in the 60/70's.

Every Corvette that left the assembly line from 1963 to 1976 was either a Sting Ray or Stingray, depending on whether it was a C2 or C3.

And what do I see on that wall above the C7 emblem but some round {red}taillights.

Hmm.. makes me wonder if GM product planning has the following long term vision :

Using Corvette as the GM ultra high performance division umbrella brand name ( no more market bottom - feeder " Chevy " name plate ) , with the iconic sports car series called " Stingray " , and then ultra high performance versions of re-bodied mini-utes, sedans, etc, having their own names--think MBZ with AMG and BMW with " M " or Audi with " RS " .

And sell this Corvette line at Cadillac dealerships , away from the gang outside of chain -smoking 20 -something year old "floor whores" who mark you as the next " up " as you roll into a typical Chevy store hoping to sell you a Cruze .

If you look at the stickys there is an actual picture of the rear of the car. You will notice the lack of round taillights.... :thumbs:

That is the real deal

They show a photo of a 1963 coupe which is a Corvette Sting Ray, yet they say it's a Stingray. For an automotive enthusiast magazine you would think they could get something that iconic correct.

I'm guessing that is yet another rendering, however this one using the leaked field manual illustrations recently seen. It does look pretty good though in my opinion. If they haven't gone to press with the issue yet, it may have an actual photo on the cover.

I was just given the photo as well, albeit a bit higher resolution... The photo is in marketing material. It will be in the new book that dealers give out.

It's obviously a drawing, perhaps, hopefully, a very accurate drawing. But that is definitely not an actual photograph of the actual car. Thus, a rendering.

Where do you get all that from a photo of the side of a building? From that photo you deduce that the C7 is going to be sold at Cadillac dealers. I look at the photo and I see a C7 crossflag emblem, a yellow Chevrolet Bowtie emblem, and what apears to be the stylized fish that looks like a stingray. But, maybe you see things in that backhoe that I don't.

No, you're not missing anything. They are definitely not round. But in the context of this rendering, if these are the correct proportions, they seem to fit better in the design. I could live with this, if not like it very much.

I'm just throwing out a far fetched idea for why they would call the new Corvette a Stingray.
But being GM, the mostly to happen is this :
The Stingray name /badge probably will be attached to the BASE model , to give it some marketing pizzaz, with an ultimate line up of : base "Stingray ", " Z06" -level model and /or "ZR1" -level model like the C6 has.

A little better shading helps put it in three dimensions for folks. I think many saw a flat butt end, but the side views have clearly shown that it would arc.

The unimaginative will need to see the real deal before their brains can understand. The bitter will continue to be bitter.

If we all liked the same things, the world would be a very boring place...

Apparently, there will be no such thing as a "base model".....they will be called Stingray like USRoute66 thinks :)

Ordered mine today pending factory spec release. Hoping for VR, a carbon fiber package and some sort of performance package. Sorry guys but a manual tranny for me just for old time sake.

I am concerned about that too but from this image, as low res as it is, it looks like there's a bit of a sheen to it. A simple clear coat would really make that rear diffuser look a bit more upscale.

or a carbon overlay...

You ignore the very obviously round tail lights in the screenshot of the official GM video, which by the way look very Italia 458-ish :thumbs:

...in favor of yet another artist's rendition (guess) on the cover of a magazine, which at this point has become multiple regurgitations of one data point: a Jalopnik guess. Guys the media is doing what they always do: repeat and replicate each other's stories even if there is no factual evidence to back it up.

I will admit that the Automobile rendition looks better than any we have seen before because their artist added some dimensionality to the fascia

Yup, after the ZL1, I expect all of GM's performance cars to have functional aero.

Jalopnik, Keeks and BlueOx's leaks have been pretty damn accurate so far. This leaked cover doesn't deviate much from those. Keeks' CAD drawing had the look of LT1 down pat months before it debuted, down to the intake manifold cover. The CAD drawing of the rear end was almost identical to this magazine cover.

Yeah, we never really saw a high res version in life-like rendering from a good source. If I was Car and Driver, I'd be pretty ashamed of how they rendered it.

Dude, look at the pic in the very first post of this thread! They are right there, round and staring you in the face!

All the other stuff, including the "manual" screenshots are just drawings, nothing more. That manual could be a fake for all we know. It takes a computer geek about 5 minutes to do a computer rendering and they can make it look like a pic, a CAD rendering, or an owner's manual - whatever they want. And they have the internet to distribute it.

The only official stuff is the video, and presumably the GT video games, since the rendering is officially reviewed and blessed by GM. And by the way, that too clearly shows round LED lamps under the camo.

I've seen the camo cars with round lights. They are just that, camo cars. :lol:

You do realize that GM uses non production taillights and headlights all the time on mules, right? That is a big part of their camo process.

Been monitoring this section for months without saying anything, and with all the taillight talk, im very surprised there has been little talk of the tail section having a diffuser that looks like it is 60% of the rear. Not complaining because I'm waiting for the big reveal...just saying, I thought my C6 had a lot of plastic look with its diffuser...

I have come to the conclusion almost ALL cars now are too tall for my liking. I happen to be driving behind a 1951 Ford & next to it was a 2012 Camry. The Camry was actually taller looking & literally taller.

I prefer the early to mid 1960's when cars were low & wide. Now, most cars look as bulky as a late 1940's sedan. A classic example is the new Camaro. Compare it to the first Camaro. The newer model simply has to much visual mass, much higher belt line.

I know part of it is crash standards, another part is as always designers simply copy each other. Regardless, I do not prefer my car, especially my sports car to have the visual mass of a late 1940's sedan. This is all subjective but when it comes down to it, I am a consumer & like everyone decide on what to buy, partially from looks.

What this means to me is if a car does not have the visual appeal of "have to own it" I will buy a car based on a more funcional criteria. Unfortunately for most sports car manufactures, their products are bought by passion & desire. Of course there some that find a car like the GT-R to look great. I am not one of them. To me, it looks like a bloated Hoover vacuum from the front. In addition, the massive amount of driver overrides turn me off.

Says the guy convinced the c7 will have round tail lights based on every bit of evidence posted against that happening. :rofl:

I find it hard to believe that there are still die hards out there that believe the car is going to have round lights. :crazy2: Can't wait for Sunday so all the ridiculous speculation can go away and the nay sayers can start backtracking and posting how they never thought it could look so good. Man, compare that rendering in Automobile with the rear end of the C6. It doesn't take a genius to see the drama of this new design is going to totally and completely antiquate the C6. I think there is little doubt about it. There are just some that still don't want to believe it, especially those that just purchased a new C6 thinking the C7 was going to be a dog. We shall see.:D

A base model is a base model, no matter what you call it.

In all honestly I am going to miss the round lights :cry That being said though, I don't think they would fit in very well with this rear design.

No, GM is screwing with the camera angle and using the reflection off of curved side glass...the image comes out taller and narrower just like it does in the fun house.

That was a light spriited comment. I dont care if the rear lights are triangles, so long as the car is better than before. its not like I stand around all day looking at the shape of the lights.

I am betting that is it...emblem location, Corvette script and all! I like it even with it's non round tail lights! We will see for sure in 48 hours!
