Wasn't The Transformers Sting Ray Concept Supposed To Be A Design Direction For C7?

What The H@LL Happened? I didn't totally love the Sting Ray Concept but it sure looked more Corvette like then what im seeing now!! :willy:

Frizzle86 01-03-2013 03:55 PM

I remember when the C5v2 came out or rather the C6. Most C5 owners complained about how the car has hardly changed ect... several of them made the move to the C6 as the design grew on them.

Hell I loved the camaro's front end but hated the rear when it first came out. Now they have grown on me as well.

I gotta say so far I like what i've seen from GM in regards to the C7. Not too crazy about the rear so far but I don't think it would deter me from getting one if I could afford one. As far as the interior well... its GM so I don't expect sport/luxury from them like I would Audi or BMW.

The problem I see is there is NO Corvette heritage in that rear end at all. They should have done a round stylized light fixture in the C2 design theme to tie it in. Now all I see is a nose that looks like a modern version of C6 and the rest of the car I just don't understand at all. IMO the side flanks in some shots look like a CTS coupe, I really don't see much traditional Corvette anywhere and that to me is sad.

keeks2915 01-03-2013 04:09 PM

2-1 people on this forum love the rear end so, GM should happily move on knowing there is a majority of support for the new direction. This is even before the reveal which will increase this love IMO.

So those that are in the minority can maintain their valid opinions and not buy one.

If GM sells more than projected, as I predict they will, it is a huge statement.

User24 01-03-2013 04:12 PM

Some say they can see Stingray concept influence in the c7, there's a thread on that.

If there is, it is very subdued. Just another wild concept that would never see the light of production, really.

If you think they made those concept cars and took nothing away from it, you're nuts. To really know what was learned would require individual inspection of every component and some engineer input. Having seen the new dash I'm disappointed we're not getting something closer to the Stingray concept, but I doubt it's going to hinder my driving experience.

BeaZt 01-03-2013 04:13 PM

If you look at the back of "stingray" and the rear of the C7 that Ox posted you an see the similarities.

Funny I liked the direction the StingRay concept was going in bringing back some of the Shark design theme but the one thing I didn't like was the rear treatment because it was to radical for Corvette IMO. The only similarity I can see is sort of the trapezoid grill treatment. HOWEVER that trapezoid grill shape seems to be showing up on every other new car from Taurus to the new Hyundai Santa Fe.

Funny how individual tastes work. I found the Stingray concept to be a garish caricature/mash-up of the C2 and C3 Vettes, which, while iconic, are totally the wrong direction for a 21st century sports car. Needless to say, I think the further they got from that Stingray concept, the better.

Mission accomplished. And ditching the round tail lights? About time in my opinion. I see a lot of Corvette in the renders -- more so the later ones that subtly rounded out all the sharp edges in the original Jalopnik version, thus improving it 100% to my eye.

The design of the C7 will, of course, be a critical determinant of the car's success. If the car falls short ANYWHERE (but particularly in the looks department), it will fail in the marketplace. Such is the level of competition.

I cannot wait for 1/13/13...and by early 2014 we should know whether your side is correct...or mine...:D

Funny you mention that. As a C6 owner. I thought the Sting Ray concept car was ugly as sin! Matter of fact, in my opinion that concept car was a complete departure from any generation of Corvette styling. If the new C7 came out looking like that, I'm not sure I would have wanted one!

I find that the C7 renders still retain much of the Corvette styling. I think it looks more like a design progression from the C6 as opposed to the Sting Ray which looks like a complete design departure of any Corvette.

Sadly though, this thread by the OP's "design" is nothing more than a progression to further his rant about the C7 design.

This statement I think entirely defines your lack of taste. The stingray concept has some interesting elements, but gawwwd...in some ways it was hideous...cartoony at best. It was appropriate for the movie, but the thing had the styling of a kit car.

For someone who doesn't like the rear end, the stingray concept I think had more in touch with the rear end of the current car more than anything.

When you see the C7 in a row of Corvettes from every generation, there's going to be no way you don't clearly know it's a Corvette. Gimme a break.

I agree and I thought the rear was especially odd. The double line fenders ( that Crabby J discovered ) will make it on the C7. That odd rear gets a major tone down on the C7 and maybe a little of the front grille.

I was PRAYING that the Transformer car was NOT the C7. While a great "movie/concept" car, it is a very overblown design, as befitting it's purpose in life (to be a show/concept car).

And Jet....go drive a Viper before you buy one! They are not for everyone (understatement of the year).

You know, I could care less if someone doesn't like it. I do care if they go out of their way to be an obnoxious lout about it here on CF7 over and over. If you don't like it, why not just show your objection by buying another car?

I don't go over to the Rustang or Viper forums to whine about a car I don't like.

That Viper interior looks sick!

....oh wait that's right it's the Dart.

IMO both the Viper and Dart have good looking interior from the pictures. They do share many characteristics just like the Camaro and Corvette will. If it's not broke....

m48xhp 01-03-2013 06:47 PM

in a word...NO. It never was meant to be the C7. Like all wild and crazy concept cars, it is just meant to see what people like and dont like. If one or two little details carried over to the C7, it was a success.

we get it...you dont like the C7. no one cares. your comments won't change anything. please return to the C6 and Viper discussion boards.

Yes, me. OP has been here for over 2 years and has a thread/post history. I checked some of the ones from when he joined and they are reasonable. OP seems to just have strongly held, unpopular, and poorly expressed opinions regarding the C7 (at least what we've seen of it), does not defend his positions effectively, and tends to lead with his chin.

The similarity to a :troll would appear to be largely coincidental.

He has been on here for much longer.....banned several times and reappeared under different names. He was banned for being too annoying regarding the Jetstream blue color. I would guess about 95% of what he posts and claims is BS.

Aerovette 01-03-2013 07:02 PM

The use of the new Camaro in the first Transformers movie set a bad precedent in that the expectation that the Corvette would follow suit was assumed.

I agree with others that things are learned from design studies that we will never know. Look at CERVI and CERVII as an example. I am sure technology came from those studies, but no cosmetic similarities jump out at me.

As for the OP, I suppose I could start 50 seperate threads expressing my dislike for asparagus, but I really believe one would get the point across.

Trolls gotta troll and pot stirrers gotta stir.

Just like that C7 you have on order? Funny that you haven't even seen a real C7 in the flesh, profess to have one on order and yet now you put money down on the Viper. The brand new Viper that just got trumped by the outgoing C6 ZR1?? You discredit yourself more and more each and every time you touch your keyboard.

Make no mistake about it, the new C7 ZR1 or what ever it will be will infact be a Viper killer. I'd bet that the new C7 Z06 will beat it as well on the track, at the gas pump, technology wise, looks and especially quality. So get used to that image I put up. It's what you will have to get used to when you pull up next to a cost comparable C7.

That said, enjoy your Viper fantasy and 20 Vette history. :crazy2: It's clearly time for you to enjoy your new buddies on the Dodge forum and run along! Take your Snake and go spank it elsewhere! The Corvette community will be much better off without you!

I don't believe there is anything but malice in his topics of late. While he does have a history here and likely even owns or owned a Vette, I have a hard time believing that any Corvette enthusiast who supposedly owned 20 Corvettes in his lifetime could be immature enough to spam this forum the way he does with his anti C7 rhetoric. Something isn't right with him. That or he was dropped one to many times (on his head) as a baby. Something just isn't right. How does that saying go? If it smells like crap.... There is usually a pile of it pretty close!

I've mentioned this in another thread but thought I would mention it here since this is a more approapriate thread to do so.

I question this rear and nose combination:

http://forums.corvetteforum.com/atta...ine=1357306299

http://forums.corvetteforum.com/atta...ine=1357306299

Seems to me, given the horizonal nature of the tail lights and the vent coming off of them, that the front of the car would have flowed much better with the rear if it had incorporated a horizonal headlight treatment with vents coming off the sides...something similiar to this:

https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/i...PcqSTYKAubzewA

Not to mention, horizontal headlights would have given the nose a more slated and wider look. As is, I am not sure the front and rear make much sense together. Hopefully, in person, it will all mesh well.

Suggest you go back and look at the comments from that time. OP even admits he didn't like it.
Opinion has softened about it over time but when it came out very few were interested in that being the next Corvette.

Raitzi 01-04-2013 09:53 AM

C&D said that there will be stingray corvette and that will have smaller turbo V8 and possibly MR layout. Maybe that will not be called corvette but anyways.

Man, the outline of the tailight and associated vent look kind of familiar. The 4 huge tailpipes in one line. Hmmm...

http://forums.corvetteforum.com/atta...ine=1357315061

That low nose with the big single opening almost vertical headlights.

http://forums.corvetteforum.com/atta...ine=1357315061

Rarely does a production car look like a concept but some cues will carry over. The C7 will look like a Corvette just like the past 6 generations have.
