my 88 up in flames today

went to eat breakfast this morning at the western sizzlin, decided to take the corvette, "beautifull day to take it out" as i was paying to leave a guy comes running in door said he called 911 and there was a red corvette out side on fire. i ran outside and it was mine, my hands started shaking real bad and almost threw up my breakfast. the employees came running outside with fire extinguisher i tried to pull the hood latch but the fire had allready burned threw it. here is the firefighters and the aftermath. RIP

corvetteronw 12-16-2012 10:19 PM

Sorry to hear about this loss

1993C4LT1 12-16-2012 10:32 PM

Man, I'm really sorry that happened. Will you fix or replace the Vette?

black88z51 12-16-2012 10:41 PM

terrible thing to happen, any idea what started the fire?

pologreenenvy 12-16-2012 10:44 PM

looks to be an electrical fire, its to far gone under the hood to rebuild. dont know what i am going to do at this point.

CRUZN C4 12-16-2012 10:47 PM

Dang that sucks! Hope the insurance pays off. There's plenty of Vettes on the market.

pologreenenvy 12-16-2012 10:47 PM

what made it worse is the wires burned together causing the fuel pump to come on and spraying fuel kept the fire going.

ch@0s 12-16-2012 10:51 PM

Sorry :sadangel:

Sweet 90 12-16-2012 10:52 PM

That just really sucks. Hope you come through this all right:cheers:

nathanours 12-16-2012 11:01 PM

I'm sorry.

What can be done to prevent this kind of thing from happening? Is it mostly relegated to the L98 cars or is it a problem with the LTx cars as well?

mcm95403 12-16-2012 11:06 PM

Wow, that really sucks. But as I've learned over the years, cars are like women - replaceable. You'll find another one.

MRANT212 12-16-2012 11:08 PM

That's terrible!! I hope your insurance company takes good care of you. Car looked beautiful...get the insurance check and try your best to find a replacement for her.

sux x10 good excuse to get a zr1

gerardvg 12-17-2012 12:26 AM

Sorry for your loss :sadangel:

Had my oil pressure sender burst spraying oil onto exhaust :ack:
Lucky i had two extinguishers in my vette and popped the hood before the release cables melted, extinguished it quickly just needed some paint repair to hood new oil pressure sender and wiring repairs.

I now have extra wires from the latch to the wiper area, looks like you may have had the dreaded fuel pressure regulator diaphragm failure:willy:

You know what they say get back on the horse, hope you replace her quickly

I agree with SHAMDAVE good time to look for a ZR1

astepup 12-17-2012 12:35 AM

duramaxsky 12-17-2012 12:48 AM

ZR-71 12-17-2012 12:59 AM

Damn that sucks big time. Sorry for losing your Beautiful Vette :(

mazdaverx7 12-17-2012 01:17 AM

sorry for your loss. helplessly watching as your car burns and as the fireman swings an axe onto the hood in order to break off the latched areas and raise the hood to put out the fire would sicken me. its just a horrible experience and my condolences go out to you for the loss of your C4.

Montana_Dan 12-17-2012 01:30 AM

Sorry for the loss and all but did you ever think your actually quite lucky to not have been zippin down the freeway when she went bitch on you, geez glad no one was hurt!

H P Bushrod 12-17-2012 02:22 AM

That sucks and we feel for you. I've lost a couple of cars over time too, none to fire though. Important thing to remember is it's just a car. There are others. Thank God for all your blessings and hug those you love, that;s what really matters. Then have fun looking for a replacement car.

Geof180 12-17-2012 09:37 AM

oh man... :(

i teared up when i scrolled down and saw the fireman with the axe... nooo!!!

DDP 12-17-2012 10:00 AM

Thats really too bad, car looked nice. I am hearing of many C4 fires and there has to be a common facture behind these fires. Makes me think about coming home after a cruise at night and parking the car in the garage, who knows what could happen. Scary.
Glad no one is hurt.

JustDennis 12-17-2012 10:26 AM

Glad you are OK. I hate that. Great looking car. The fireman with the axe made me cringe.

DIP51 12-17-2012 01:56 PM

That'll buff right out!!!:D

Just goofing...trying to get a smile.

Be thankful it happened there and not after you wheeled it into your garage...could've been MUCH worse!!! My garage is right under my bedroom. THAT would have made a mess!!!!

Glad everyone is OK!!! Time for some Christmas shopping!!!!!:woohoo:

Like everyone else said...I hope your insurance carrier treats you right.

wonder if c4's are prone to fires than any other generation?

sorry dude that sucks

rad928music 12-17-2012 03:57 PM

Hope your Insurance works out well.
Ive seen some car fires on some new cars and not just Vettes.
Where you working on it recently?
Did Mice get in and chew up some wires?

Good News is there's allot of C4's out there.
Bad news if your emotional attached to that particular one.
Good Luck Man.

WGlen C4 12-17-2012 04:51 PM

Sorry for your loss!

The firemen with the axe made my stomach turn. Hope everything works out ok for you.

I worry about this all the time, just don't know how to avoid it.

C4's are not prone to fires. :toetap: In my line of work I can say every car has the risk of fire. This is a C4 Corvette forum, so the only fires anyone writes about here is a C4 Corvette fire leading all to think they're prone to it. As ANY car gets older, the wires can become brittle or rodents chew on them leading to a fire risk. I'd think that most of us look under our hoods enough that we notice bad or damaged wires and parts before they become a serious problem. I would say our C4's are at risk no more than any other 20 year old car.

peyc2 12-18-2012 04:14 PM

Wow that really stinks. So sorry for you rloss.

I too as a Fireman see a lot of vehicle fires, just recently we had a brand new Land Rover, 2013, with 200 miles on it go up!! It happens, this one was electrical )Land Rover) short under the hood.

Sorry, but I have seen all sorts of strange ones.
Good luck with insurance, let us know how you make out.

mazdaverx7 12-22-2012 01:51 AM

Great news mate. Every cloud has a silver lining and main thing is no one was hurt and you were OK.

I was just watching something on cars catching on fire. They did an experiment where they poured petrol (gas) onto the exhaust manifolds whilst the engine was running and nothing happened. Then they tipped brake fluid on the manifold and it instantly lite up. Gas by itself is relatively harmless unless it gets in contact with a spark (dodgy wiring).

Just maybe we should look if the reservoir, cap and booster is leaking fluid. Not saying that is what caused your fire but just food for thought.

Hey, for $175, at the very least, part it out and keep the bumpers as living room decoration! :woohoo:

Did anyone realize that windsheild washer fluid is flammable? I've seen a few car fires over the years that started when w.w.fluid was added while the car was running. Most were totaled. Glad this story turned out OK and no one was injured.

I'm so sorry for your loss. My 92 went up in flames 53 hours after having a new battery installed. I'm in a legal action against the shop and would welcome anyone who has information that may help my case. Did you ever find the cause of your fire?

Oh man. You can rebuild her better than she ever was. I think I speak for us all, when I say this.

We want pics on your new build and new vette. Hopefully the new one you got didn't eat too much into the 12k you got :)

aj1988 01-12-2013 01:46 PM

Not C4 related but a long time ago a buddy and I had just swapped heads on a BB 66 and we were trying to set the valves. Very typical oil getting sprayed from the rockers and the next thing we knew we had a fire.

Now when I set the valves I will turn the car off if there is smoke on the exhaust and let it cool off and use cleaner to get the oil off and then continue with the adjustment. So if you have a leak from the valve covers be careful about driving the car.

One other thing we did was buy an old pair of covers and cut the top off so we could get to the rocker nuts and not have oil dripping off the head onto the exhaust.
