Anyone bought some type of Extended Warranty/Mechanical Breakdown Insurance
Has anyone bought some type of Extended Warranty/Mechanical Breakdown Insurance...
and if so, who is the underwriter/company and what do you think of it's coverage in real life use? I'm considering one from USAA, underwriter Assurant and another called MAP, Motorist Assistance Plan, unsure of underwriter. |
I have GMPP Major Guard on my 06, will buy it for the 427 and I had it on my CTS. My daughter had it on her Enclave and it paid for itself a couple of times.

If you are still within your original 3/36 warranty, almost everyone here who buys something gets the GMPP Major Guard. Most buy it through Dennis Fichtner, Forum Sponsor.
If you are past the 3/36, Dennis also sells an aftermarket warranty that gets some good reviews. Email Dennis with your VIN and mileage. He will send you a long and detailed attachment of the various combinations of months/miles/deductibles/prices you can choose from. He is usually the best price, and absolutely first class to deal with. We've had GMPP on all three of our Corvettes, the first two definitely "made money" for us and the third is about break-even now, with many months/miles to go. There are certainly arguments for/against getting an extended warranty, but on the Corvette I don't need to think about it. |
so according to what I looked up...$2200 to have your car fully covered to $100,000 miles? not bad.

I have Nationwide Auto. Paid $2,200 for it at 98,000 miles When my GMPP was about to run out. I am now covered until 200,000 miles or 5 years.
There are some minor exclusions. But I already have had my transmission replaced at the dealer from RPM and warranty paid around 3,000 for it. So basically I will wait for another item to break and smile when it does. |
I am 3 months past the 36/36, with about 28K miles. I still have some of the powertrain warranty if it goes to 48 or 60 months.
I was advised to make sure that any extended coverage.. to make sure it covers the thermostat, radiator, heating/cooling issues/parts, not necessarily the A/C as I understood the warning. Any other thoughts? If I am past the basic warranty, I am guessing I can not get a GMCC extended warranty? |

I paid $300.

No biggie. I am waiting for my engine to blow up.
|
So far the quotes I'm getting, for 3 yrs and about 36 K miles area = $3600.00.

Nationwide is good. Stay away from MAP. I manage a repair facility and MAP always seems to wiggle out of paying for a repair.

I am talking to a guy from local GM dealership, he has a plan from Superior. I should have the details soon. I was told Mercury is a good plan, but may not cover thermostats/heating/cooling (for the engine)... I'll need to check that part out. |
I bought Mastertech....seven years, 60,000 miles. If I never have a claim, I get all my money back at the end of the term. Covers more than the GM Major Guard and about everything except normal wearable items. Full nationwide coverage. Cost was $2485.00. Anything covered by the GM standard warranty does not count against the plan. Seemed like a good deal.

Looking at their overall coverage, they do cover some - or a good number of items that none of these other major plans seem to address. I'll take a more thorough look. Good info! Thank you. |
