White Film on Dash
 

To begin; YES, I DID a search and came up empty....maybe using wrong search words....don't know. I started there (w/search) because it seems like I have read something here in the past regarding this issue.

There is a white film on the dash of my car and it is also appearing on a few places on door panels as well.

Does anyone know what this is or how to clean it off? It's definitely NOT dust.

It seems like the dash/door material has bled or emitted this film. The dash is black so it really shows up. I have been meaning to take care of it, but wanted to post here and see if any of you guys have had this experience/happen before and what cleaner (or whatever) it took to safely remove/clean it off.

It seems like I did see something here in the past about this. That's why I did a search first but came up empty.

I sure would appreciate any help or reccomendations from anyone, especially if you have came across this issue before and what is done to correct it.

To add: it sat up nearly all summer (mid-May to early August) because of having wheel issues and needing to be refinished. This is when this occured.

Outgassing of the materials in the dash. Got it on the dash, glovebox door, inside car doors in my new 2012 C6. My best recollection is the problem will eventually lessen and go away. Just wipe it off with some detailing liquids.

It's fairly common.

Regular mild soap & water will take it off. Door panels it's usually where you hands or arms touch. It's normal. I use Mcguires natural shine after cleaning. It gives it a fresh from the factory look - not greasey. After using Mcguires it happens MUCH less.

I use Aerospace 303 Protectant in their 16 oz spay bottle. Spray on a rag and wipe down the dash and door panels. You can find it at NAPA or a local boat supply store. I paid around $13-$14 at the Ski Shack here in Springfield, MO.

High Tech method-

Wipe away with a cotton towel, damp with warm water.
I do it about every 6-8 months on our 2009, works well.

I was wondering this too.

I have seen that white powdery stuff on edge of dash cover. It can be removed but it's difficult with the way that windshield is angled. I think I shoved a microfiber into the crevice and wiped it all off.
The Dodge Challenger also gets this white reside all over the top of dashboard.:ack::eek:

I use 303 and do it monthly on all my vehicles dashes and all plastic areas, works great and has UV protection to boot:rock:

Can't use 303 on 2005 Corvette interior as it leaves white streaks. I have to use Jimmy G's cleaner and protectant. 303 is my favorite for my other car and tires.

Aerospace 303 for this problem. It will work wonders. Do NOT use Armorall.

I agree, Aerospace 303 seems to have worked for many of us. Usually available at a Boat Shop. I dont know what the real cause is, but in my Corvette, I have noticed it most on the upper door panels close to the glass. I have always guessed it was the salt or the acid on/in my skin. Just a guess ...

It's a good idea to use a protectant, or vinyl will eventually dry out and crack. Also make sure you always put a windshield sunscreen when car is parked. And tint the windows to decrease heat inside the car while parked. It also helps protect door panels and seats from direct sunlight. Don't forget to condition the leather in the seats too. You can get the 32 oz. size. They now also have a 303 cleaner available.

Or do like I do and leave it in the garage 95% of the time, out of the sun. :D

I use 303 protectant on all my interior and engine components. No white areas at all. 303 does give the surface a slight satin sheen appearance vice the original dull look from the factory, but everyone that sees my interior and engine bay loves how it looks. I even have a good friend of mine with an '05 convinced to start using it...:thumbs:

I also use 303 spray detailer for the paint too!! It too has SPF 40...:rock:

Appreciate the replies. When I was cleaning it (after it had set up for those months) I was using a microfiber towel dampened with H2O. It did NOT work well. In fact you can see were I did it and half of it is still there. It NEVER sits out in the Texas sun especially during summer months. It's always inside unless I'm out in it somewhere.

I stopped using armor all years ago.

I am going to look for some Aerospace 303.

To Joe: dam, I just drove by the boat place and so I guess I'll go back. The only NAPA around here is 20+ miles one way. Several Auto Zones here though. Seems like they never have what I want unless they order it in. Hate going there.

Does Wally World carry it? One of those close by as well.
