Correct starter?
 

l'm trying to determine if my old starter is correct for my car. I just replaced it with a parts store rebuild and don't want to return it for the core charge if its original.
It is marked as follows..1108430 4D191. The nose of the starter is marked with the digits 881. The car is a 71 with a May build.

Your 1108430 is the correct starter part number for a 1971 350 automatic, but it's not original to your car - the date code says it was made on April 19, 1974; that same starter was used in that application through early 1975, so it's a later GM service replacement. It would be correct for a '74 built after April. :thumbs:

What would the p/n be for a 4 speed car? In what way are the starters different? The car is a standard shift.

Early '71 small-block 4-speed cars used 1108338, later 71's used 1108418. The 4-speed cars used a 14" 168-tooth flywheel, and the automatics used a 12-3/4" 153-tooth flexplate; the starter noses are different between the 4-speeds and automatics due to the different ring gear diameters. :thumbs:

So it appears what I have is a rebuilt starter body for a auto with a nose for a 4 speed. A mismatch of parts that would make no difference to a rebuilder.

I have a spare starter that was given to me for my 1969 427 with 4 speed manual. The numbers are 1108776 6M164 What is the year of the starter? Thanks, Bob

#1108776 was used on '75-'76 350 automatics; that one was made on December 16, 1976, so it's also a service replacement (based on the date stamp, which may not mean anything if it's been through a rebuilder's shop). :thumbs:

Thanks for the information. Interesting that is was made for a small block automatic and my car is a big block manual. Someone made a mistake years ago. I guess it can be used for a core exchange,or I could sell it. Bob
