California black & yellow license plate paint

Yesterday I started restoring my CA black and yellow plates that are original to my '64 coupe. They were not bad for 48 years old but had some rust. I must say the bad boys at Folsom really know how to put on paint. I soaked the plates for an hour in stripper and it had no effect. I have some photos that I will post of the project when completed. I have scoured the internet and have not been able to determine the black that was used. I believe it was a satin black, not a gloss black. The yellow is Caterpillar yellow. Also, was the paint enamel? Any help would be appreciated.

I've used him before and his work is amazing. My plates had a few dents and when I got them back they looked better than new.

Dave ..
Wondering what you came up for black and yellow paint for the license plate redo. Was the black paint satin, semi, or gloss?. Did you use Caterpillar yellow? .. Enamel or lacquer?
Also looking to redo my CA black and yellow plates. Any info passed on - much appreciated.

I have a set of 63 plates and both the yellow and black are very shiney. They are not restored, and appear to have been used very little.

I am almost done and have taken photos along the way. I plan on posting soon but to answer your questions, I used acrylic enamel paint. The black was gloss black and the yellow was 1975 Dodge School Bus Yellow.

Thanks for passing on the info. Looking forward to seeing pics of your finished black and yellow plates.

Yellow paint codes for CA black plates

Chrome Yellow medium is the correct color for 60's CA black plates. Took forever to finally find it and I know I'm wicked late to this thread but still thought I'd share!

I can't figure out how to put a link in this post so click on my name and search my threads for my pictures on my project. This was done in 2013.

Hope this helps. From my 63. Black and yellow are shiny.

new plates

If you have a current registration Ray Ray out of San Diego will make you brand new plates. Not cheep but beautiful. I have two sets the only difference is the metal is not as thick. This was his number has been awhile since I've called. 858-271-6858

This thread is over 5 years old. In CA, DMV will not register restored/repainted/altered plates. Not in my experience. If you have original paint on your plates, leave it alone. It is what it is, and it's correct.

new plates

These are some of Ray Rays. The Dodge T/A plates were vanity plates I got in the early 80s. They were the white reflector style. When I found out about Ray Ray I had him do the black and yellow. I know they're supposed to be blue and yellow. Once at a car show two young highway patrolmen were saying they didn't know they had vanity plates in the 70s:lol: DMV doesn't have a clue:rock:

I've registered several cars with restored plates. Never had a problem. Here's an example.

It depends on the DMV you go to and who you deal with. At my local DMV, restored plates are not given a pass. Glad it worked out for you. They look great!

Great point!! Most of the people working in Folsom either don't care or don't know. Next time try another DMV!!

Did not have any problems with my restored plate. You just got the wrong person at the DMV.

Why the prices of california black plates are so high compared to the other states ?

Because you can run them legally via year of manufacture program (YOM). Plus. its California... Truly, the program is very expensive. Just people are cashing them out and selling them to other people who want to run the old plates. Before YOM you had to have the original plates for that particular car or else you had to run a new set.
