(OIL COOLERS), C6 variants, LS2/Z51, Z06, ZR1??

Wanted to be clear on the OEM oil coolers available for the C6

1. Z51/LS2(in radiator)
2. Z51/LS3 same??
3. Z06 air to oil, mounted up front in front of rad/cond.
4. ZR1??

Thanks for clearing this up. If anyone has pics, that would be great.

2006-2010(Ithink) Z06's have the oil cooler heat exchanger mounted in front of the condenser. The ZR1 and Z06 from 2011^(I think) use the radiator coolant running through a heat exchanger mounted on the side of the oil pan in front of the oil filter.

I've lost track of which years have which. It gets very confusing.

I believe the LS3/2008 was the Z51 changeover to air

thanks for the pics

JRHAWK9 03-23-2012 03:56 PM

mine's an '08 Z51 and I have the air to oil......

Motorhead-47 03-23-2012 04:02 PM

The manual transmission Grand Sport used the Z06 air-to-oil for a while. Not sure what the current model Grand Sport manual trans uses. Auto Trans Grand Sports never got the cooler. I think the Z06 went fluid-to-fluid in 2010-ish timeframe.

I have a 2007 with Z51 and I'm concerned with Oil temps.. 230+ during spring time spirited street runs.. Is the external Air-Oil cooler an option for me?? Would it be better than the inside the radiator oil cooler that I believe my 2007 Coupe has?? I'm concerned about oil temps at upcoming HPDE events...

I just read on C6 Performance Corvette's page that the 2007-2009 Z51 package did NOT have a EOC option?? Is this true.. does my 2007 Z51 car not have any additional EOC built into the radiator?? Anybody know. I'm thinking about adding an aftermarket oil cooer.

Check just above the oil filter for two hoses running to the front of the car.

yep.. that makes sense... (I was just under there the other day... should have looked, but I was sure the car had an oil cooler).

I posted this same response in another post:

My 0EM 2008 manual Z51 has three oil coolers:

1. External engine oil cooler
2. External power steering fluid cooler
3. Integrated cooler with radiator for manual transmission oil.

ZR1 gets this one:

I believe the gs gets this one:

ZR1 and Z07 also get a better radiator

Later model Z06's got the first one above.

The small one is a Z51 only oil cooler..not sure what all years though....2008 for sure.

The GrandSport, at least for 2010 got the large Z06 full width cooler...that is IF you ordered a Coupe with a 6-speed manual/dry sump engine. Like I mentioned earlier...the number of different combos hurts the head.

SteveDoten 07-01-2012 09:24 AM

Z06 added the oil to coolant unit in 2010?

I have a 2008 c6 z51 manual trans and mine has the radiator hook ups and the smaller black oil cooler. I haven't looked down by the oil filter yet but i know for a fact mine has those two.

JasonS5555 01-06-2014 12:23 PM

ALL the M6 dry sump GS had the large "Z06" style air/oil cooler. For some reason GM didn't swap them over to the ZR1 style cooler....

HTH,
Jason

Buy a 2006-2009 Z06 cooler and lines. It will bolt right in.

HamadoZr1 01-24-2016 09:58 AM

I need Zr1 oil cooler upgrade, can someone tell me the name or website or whatever?

Just go to the dealer and get 2011 ZR1 heat exchanger. Not sure if it will work because of the way it bolts to the block.
