Big Pro Topline Heads for 383
I'm building a low buck 383 and found a set of Pro Topline heads on craigslist for a good deal. The only thing that worries me is the fact that they are 235cc intake runners. Will that kill my bottom end when coupled with an Edelbrock High Flow Tpi base and Accel intake runners? I have chosen a comp cams 08-502-8 grind cam based on their recommendation. The heads also have ridiculously huge 2.08/1.60 valves, don't know if that factors in at all. Any help greatly appreciated as usual. Thanks gd

Pass on the heads. Thats a big miss match. I have PTL 180s on my ZZ4 miniram motor. 235 is huge.

<sigh> I was afraid of that. Guess I'll look for some 185's or 190's. Consensus is that 190's would not drop the intake velocity too much, right?

190s are fine
How much are you looking at spending on heads? You can run a big head but must be the right application to get away with it. TPI isnt it. (230cc on a non tpi 383 here) |
I got a good deal on my high flow baseplate so I hate to walk away from the tpi at this point. I'm hoping to stumble across some used heads on craigslist/corvette forum/through a friend, if not I'll probably go with either Edelbrock Performer 185's or perhaps those cheapie Procomp 190's.

Ooo I found Dart Shp Pro 1's in both 180cc and 200cc for 940 a pair new on 'that auction site'. Any thoughts? Better or worse than Edelbrocks or Procomps?
|
Way better than the 235s. Dart has a good reputation. 190s would be good on a 383. Not sure they would be any better than the 180s with that intake. Maybe someone has tried that combo here on CF.

Wouldnt use those Pro nothings if you gave them to me.
Darts are a good as cast head the 180s actually pour to 191 they would work. Thin they have an SHP head which is a decent performance/buck head. Edelbrock has a number of different heads that could fit your app. Stay away from the real cheapie heads out there. Know youre on a budget but with heads experimenting with off brands usually results in $$ and a teardown. |
