The later Z06's had the heavier SMC roof panel, that increased weight around 4-5 pounds. Of course, if you had the recall done on the roof, then your 2006 would now have the heavy roof panel.

Some changes made in the transmission and differential housings increased weight because of additional material added to increase strength and heavier axles to increase their strength.

A couple of pounds here and a couple of pounds there add up to the 43 pound increase, but most of that weight is beneficial.

The roof recall had nothing to do with the material in the roof panel. It had to do with the adhesive. The fix for the dealers was to re-adhere the existing panel, not replace it. Are you sure about your data? I had the roof recall done on my 2006 Coupe after the roof delaminated.

My 2006 roof was definitely replaced. Not sure what it was replaced with. :willy:

First recall was to inject an adhesive foam. That failed to correct the problem. A second recall was to replace the polycarbonate panel with a SMC panel. NHTSA Campaign ID Number 09V491000. Since then ALL(except those with the Carbon fiber roof) C6's with the painted roof panel have the SMC material(and the extra weight).

Very seldom does a change make a problem worse then what it was before they tried to improve it(but there are exceptions, and then they try and fix the fix).

C7Z...so much "improvement" in one car that it went full retard.

HA. Didn't notice the old date until I read the whole thread.

Still enjoyed the read though. Since I want to buy a C6Z probably next year.

I didn't see anyone mention the 2009 had the rear hatch assist added. This also added weight. If I'm correct?

Not sure the rear hatch assist is really worth it though. I don't know because I only own a C5 FRC.....with a trunk hatch. :toetap:

The 06 and 07's are in my price range. Although I have seen high mileage (100,000 plus) 09's for a low price that I might consider...even with all the added weight.

When I was looking the most important thing to me was to find one with the head issue already addressed by a reputable shop and was a 2LZ. I didn't want to buy a car and immediately take it to get the heads done. I just couldn't drive one and risk it grenading. Just my personal opinion. I ended up with a 09 2LZ for the record!

If I got one, I'd just budget for heads right off the bat

Ok so I had decided to purchase a Z06 after considering a Porsche Cayman and M3. I found the perfect Z06 (2006) with only 6k miles and I thought I had a deal. Long story short, deal fell through and now that I have spent some time looking through this forum I have concerns about the 2006 and 2007 models.

Can anyone explain the differences that 2008 brings? I know there is a transmisison change but not sure if thats good or bad and I would lose the options of GMPP.

What else changed in 08? Thanks in advance!

i have a question. So i own a 2008 z06. Bought a torque tube that was on a 2006-07 z06 and its an inch shorter. Is that right because i figured they would both be the same length considering they are both z06’s.

Different transmission. 2006-2007 had the T56. 2008+ have the TR6060. Whether or not that makes up a difference of 1", I'm not certain, but it's a good place to start.

No roof issues once the recall is done. They replace everything and your roof will be just like an 08+ once it is done.

Get whatever you can get a good deal on IMO. I think the 06-07s are the ones to buy because of the lower cost. With the $5-7k you save you can do a clutch, cam, heads, headers, etc and be having a lot more fun.

The roof recall was a nightmare for me. Finally just fixed it myself. The dealer that did my recall stripped the passenger side rear bolt and the left side actually fell apart as I heard the washes fall to the floor. It creaked wildly too. Not every dealer performs recalls reliably.

Why are you commenting on a thread that is 7 years old?

Because a legitimate question was asked? I was one of the original participants in this thread a decade ago, and I have no problem with it. Sometimes it's nice to have that trip down memory lane. :)
