Hood Release is broken

Anyone know how or know a link to where I can fix my hood release...?

Or know a way to do it without it?

Did the cable break or is it the hood release handle??

Can you post a photo? Description is not quite clear.

On both sides push down on your hood over the latches . If you hear a click it means it didn't align right when you closed it the last time. It should open now.

Are you saying that the cable came out of the release lever at the hood end? Here's a pic of that area, from when I did my emergency release cable. Maybe this can help you describe what's happened with yours.

92ragtop has a good pic of how to do it. It's a common problem on these cars and an easy fix. Statistics show 85% of the emergency cables are installed by owners who have already experienced the problem!

Here's mine, color coordinated to the car no less. (And I put mine on without waiting for a failure)

Both sides????

I hate to ask what might be an obvious question, but don't you have to do both sides when rigging up the "emergency release cable"? I looked at my '96 today and I couldn't figure out how to do it with just one cable pull. I'm looking to do this before something bad like a cable break with the hood closed happens. Maybe I'm missing something?

That's right - although my photo only shows one side, the passenger side has the identical arrangement. :yesnod:

Thanks for the quick reply!

I figured it must be for both sides but then, you never know!
BTW, I used to live up your way (Buffalo) but now in Texas where we don't have to lay up the Vettes for the winter. As a matter of fact, we're expecting 78* here (near Dallas) tomorrow! Downside to that is the miles add up a lot quicker!

I don't know if this is your problem but my release handle fell out from its mount under the dash. It is held in by a roll pin which came out. I have the pin but because of space and tool constraints I couldn't get it back in. I just used a bolt instead and a nut and another nut to lock the first nut. 87 coupe.
P.S. With the handle loose I could not pull on it (the cables) enough to release the hood.

Vetteblack-96 01-20-2012 11:50 PM

Sadblack, I think the release handle gives you more leverage than a straight pull on the cables. At least that's what it feels like in mine.
Sadly in Corvettes as well as almost all other cars, things aren't designed to be repaired easily. One of my pet peeves is having to remove almost the whole dash to get at the heater core on a lot of newer vehicles, where they used to be right under the dash in the old days. I don't even want to think about the heater core in my Vette.

Yeah thanks, rub it in! :toetap: 17 degrees, 2-4" snow tonight, and the Vette sleeps under its cover. :( Oh well, about the time you're hitting 115 in July you'll be wishing for Buffalo after all! :D We're actually headed there one of these weekends - to the former HowDees in Williamsville. Also been to Sportsmans Tavern in Black Rock but would NOT take the Vette there!

Buffalo summers

RR Man...I've been all over the country in my line of work and I think Western New york summers rank at the top, weather wise. Only problem is they're too short (like I'm telling you something you don't already know). I lived on the river on Grand Island for 20 years and if I won the lottery I'd build a summer house there in a heartbeat.
ps: It only got up to 107* here last summer, but we had over 100 days of 100+temps. It was a bit warm!
