[Choice] Kenwood Excelon dnx9980hd or Pioneer AVIC Z130BT?
I'm looking for a new HU and my choices so far are the Kenwood Excelon dnx9980hd and the Pioneer AVIC Z130BT.
I like the specs on both of them but I really like that the Kenwood uses Garmin GPS software. Although navigation is not my primary criteria. Anyone who is familiar with both units, do you have any pro's and con's of each HU? Please be specific too. Thanks. |
I believe the best way I've seen it put.....
Kenwood is great Nav with good iPod Pioneer is good Nav with great iPod |

wait for the Kenwood 9990HD This is going to be awesome. The new KEnwoods are going to be 3 times faster this year and you will love it. The Pioneer units I will have info on next week when we get back from CES |
Go with Dennis (c5BearsFan) he won't steer you wrong, also Mark said it correctly. I have a Pioneer Z120 and love it. Don't think you can go wrong with either unit.

Can't speak for the Avic, but my Kenwood 9940 radio reception is lacking. Have had Pioneer in the past (1990) and the radio reception was good. Might be the vette antenna though.

:D When you get more info on what the "forum" pricing will be, and info on the new Pioneer units after CES, shoot me a PM. I'm in the market for some new tunes. I might also want to get on board with some Focal components, too... depends on what direction I want to go with it down the road. |
I've always been drawn to Kenwood because of the Garmin GPS.

One thing really confuses me....with the 9990HD.....which harness retains all of your stock features. The car is a 08 convertible with navigation, bose, and I use the onstar all the time. Does it matter with heads up display (it currently shows some navigation and cd info)?

Kenwood has a new Maestro harness coming. Just is not finished yet. This is going to be retail of 169.99 half the price of the gmos100 not sure if the Maestro harness from Kenwood will work with HUD yet |

How big of a deal will it be to switch harnesses (to the Maestro) if it will support headsup display. I went back over to the shop that will be doing the install this morning. After discussing what additional features the GMOS100 will support, I decided the cost difference was not worth it. I will be really interested in the new kenwood harness if it supports the heads up display. |

Did you get my email regarding the options available for speakers? I saw the speakers you advertised, and did know how they compare to the factory bose speakers, and also what else is available?
I am about 150 emails behind- I am sorry. I have had 7 installs this week for customers and just running behind on emails Dennis |
My 9980HD has always been slow as molasses and there's no Ipod/Iphone involved. My understanding is that Kenwood has recognized the problem and apparently their best response is to offer the 9990HD. AFAIC the 9980HD never should have been released. It is not a good idea to buy something that has not been out long enough to be well evaluated by unbiased audiophiles.

I have a 9980HD and don't have any problem with it being slow. It's my understanding the people complaining are the ones with Ipod/Iphones hooked up with like 10 billion songs on them that is causing the problem. Also I decide on the 9980HD because Kenwood removed feature from the 9990HD that are on the 9980HD and I couldn't pass up $700 for a brand new 9980HD.

many changes to speed of the units. The 9990 is a 2012 model as the 9980 unit is no longer available. The 80 series Kenwood were slower yes as well as the 60, 40 and 20 series. Each year they improve on something Pioneer had horrible NAV in the past. They listened as well and upgraded the nav to a much better NAVTEQ based nav |
