Crackling Static in Bose System
 

I have a 1994 Convertible with the Bose CD stock system and I am getting some annoying crackling and static from my passenger front speakers (intermittent when I turned up the volume), I had another set of stock original speakers and swapped them out and it did not fix my problem, now I'm thinking that perhaps the amp itself is bad (capactitor maybe), where is the amp located and what the easiest and cheapest way to fix it? Thanks for your help.

Each speaker has an amplifier board behind it. If you can get another one to swap, that would be quickest, but I have fixed three of them successfully to date. Search by my name as there is a post about it.

My '86 had that problem and it turned out to be the radio itself. It was especially bad when I played with the treble or bass. I took the radio out and took it to a shop. It just needed a cleaning/tune-up. $50.

Thanks Mike, assuming it is the amplifier board (I trust this is only on the passenger front side behind the speakers) when is the best place to get one used or do I have to buy a new one from GM? Thanks again, Joey

Thanks Pres712, it does not do it immediately and does not seem to be tied to the treble or bass controls, mainly all volume when i turn it up over half way and it has been playing for a while (might be heat related?).

My 85 had the same issue as the other 85 and it was the head unit.....easy enough just added an Alpine problem solved and it sounds way better with ipod controls...sirius...and a cd player

Thanks can I just wire in a new head unit and keep the oem amps and speakers or do I have to run all new wiring to new speakers to eliminate the factory amps and speakers?

If you change the head unit and keep the bose speakers u will need a special line input to lower the watts that go to the Bose speakers/amps. I wanted to keep my vehicle easily swapped back to original so I kept the Bose speakers. I will probably end up replacing them as the original 4 inch Bose speakers blow. The rear takes either a 6x9 or 6 1/2 with a mounting plate. The rears are vey easy to change out. The fronts on the other hand suck you have to take the doors apart.

I assumed you change only the speaker and not the whole enclosure with the amps in them. The first thing you need to figure out is if the crackling is from one speaker itself or from more than one speaker. Sound can be misleading and getting this right is the first important step.

Most of the time it is not the tuner or the head in dash. The amps can crackle and squeak whether there is audio or not. If you can localize it to one speaker then it is probably the amp. Usually it's a few electrolytic capacitors. They are not difficult to fix if you have some electronic experience. Each to his own. If you like doing this stuff and can handle it you might be able to save a bunch of money. Or you can spend the money and send it off. The important thing is identify where the problems is first or you might be sending off boxes that are OK.
