69 Clutch Replacement and Problem
 

Hi.. Just had my clutch replaced as well as a couple of motor mounts. I'm getting some vibration, chatter, and/or slight jerking (not a smooth acceleration) when engaging the clutch in 1st gear. I also get clutch pedal vibration when the pedal is very slightly depressed in any gear. I took it back into the shop and the mechanic adjusted the free-play. That did not fix the problem!

Can someone tell me what may be wrong ? I want to make sure I can pass on any info to my mechanic when I return the car again for this problem. Thanks for any advice ! :D

Is it a new clutch. I was having problems with mine and it turned out the clutch linkage was causing the new (Centerforce) clutch to bind, due to the fork being pushed down and away instead of just straight away from the clutch.

OK, without getting technical, a chattering clutch can be caused by one or a combination of the following:

Warped disc (usually defective - I've only seen this twice)

Warped pressure plate (very common - caused by improper tightening of the 6 bolts that hold it to the flywheel)

Bad pilot bushing or bearing (trans input shaft off center)

Bad front trans bearing

Grease/oil/foreign matter on disc (engine leaks, greasy hands, etc..)

Linkage geometry (this includes a wrong length T.O. bearing, but more common is a flywheel that has had too much material machined off - I use only NEW GM flywheels)

Loose flywheel (most unbelievable thing I've ever seen)

My guess is it has the wrong TO bearing or cover, or a damaged cover (pressure plate). Adjustment will not fix this problem. Good luck.

Wrencher covered most of the possibilities but one not mentioned was flywheel resurfacing. Was the flywheel resurfaced? A new clutch disc & PP coupled with a worn flywheel with an irregular surface will cause chatter and erratic clutch engagement/disengagement.

Had a strange chattering in mine when taking up the slack in the clutch. Turned out that stepping on the clutch moved the flywheel/crank far enough forward to allow the flywheel to just tap the edge of the sheetmetal cover at the front of the bellhousing. :confused:

Solution was to pull the cover and bend the edges out a little for clearance. :smash:
