:iagree: Makes the car 100% funner to drive but apparently not for everyone (but most Z owners who are motor heads LOVE it).

My 06 bone stock did not do it either, until I then did the oem stock Z06 muffler mod and then the fun really began! :D

arkus 10-02-2011 06:27 PM

I have an 09Z stock .

I've tried stock pre-2011's with the stock, corsa, and b&b fusion exhausts (those were the only mods on the cars). The most burbling and popping came from the b&b fusions. But, it's still not nearly as good as the 2011 system. And the good thing about getting a 2011 is that if a LEO does decide to pull me over, he won't ticket me for an aftermarket exhaust...what do I do??? From what the engineers said, I can't just put in the 2011 exhaust system into the '08 because there is also the engine tuning aspect that leave the exhaust valves open for a bit on the 2011, that enhances the burbling and popping sounds.

Just get a mild to wild switch then u can decide when its open or not. or just get a tune 06 and 07 Z's (most of them) dont have warrantys anymore anyways

Your 09 stock Z isn't supposed to do it. 2006-2010 stock exhaust does not pop/burble on decel.

arkus 10-02-2011 07:55 PM

oh .
thanks:)

My '09Z has an H pipe. Do the '11s have X pipes?

Yes *and* different mufflers.

FastestBusaAround 10-02-2011 10:47 PM

Compared to my '08 Viper with Belanger headers/ exhaust and a 355 rear diff...my Z doesn't pop much.

I did the muffler mod on my Z, but popping on decel stops once the ECM takes over, around 5 seconds after I let go the throttle. My Viper will do it (loud too) starting form 2200 RPM down and won't stop until the engine revs get under 1000. I wish I could get my Z to do the same --

:iagree: x2 I just love it...(M2W open)

Okay, so popping aside (admission of hijacking in progress :D), how do H- and X- pipes affect torque curve? Any other differences?

Sheesh, everyone has given this guy their opinions and a thesis on why the popping occurs....but no one has given the poor guy a straight honest answer.

The answer is easy.....you want to stop the popping? Change to a 2006-2010 Z06 exhaust and you're done. No more popping.

For others interested in the popping that own a 2006-2010. All you have to do is the muffler mod and TADA...you now have popping. Pulling the fuse for the valves does not create popping....the only thing that will create the popping is when the baffles are welded shut in the stock mufflers.

Hope that clears it up for folks that WANT, and DON'T want the popping!

No, but you do have a Mullet and a def leopard t-shirt

My C5 LS1 with Mild Cam, Heads and air in /air out had the identical note. Very characteristic of that block. My 06 Z .....very similar.

So it's normal to hear a distinct "pop" after a quick shift from 1-2? I understand the "burbling" is normal but op mentioned he had a noticeable pop during spirited shifts.

:nonod: Sorry sir, no they haven't....not at least on any of my cars.....they popped when either the header flange gasket was cracked or collector gasket cracked, otherwise ZERO popping!

And to you exhaust-popping lovers....HEY GUYS...lighten-up a bit! or maybe go pop a bit :rofl::rofl: I didn't start this thread to debate the merits of popping.....I was seeking the collective expertise of this forum for a technical answer, not to criticize those that like popping. Thanks to those that contributed their positive input!

And for those of you still interested in GM's official position on this I have it! I called my newly found GM "insider" (Group Manager, Brand Quality Performance Cars / Corvette) and here's what he told me:
Seems pretty straight forward to me and several others have posted their thoughts as well along a siliar line of thought.

Now for the rest of you....I'm very curious to know if anyone that has headers on their car with no cats.....does your car still pop?

My 2007 Z06 has KOOKS 1 7/8" headers, no cats and a Sunset Orange Creations, Exhaust Commander. (The ULTIMATE M2W.) It pops and I like it and I rarely drive with the exhaust closed. (I thought that it popped before I did the exhaust modification, but I could be mistaken.)

:iagree: AND ADD that stock mufflers with headers. no cats and flaps open will pop. too. It might even pop with flaps closed, but I haven't tested that setup.

This is a pop that I do NOT like. I only get it occassionally though so, it is not too bad.
