1967 Teak wood Steering Wheel questions
 

I have an opportunity to purchase what a friend says is a 1967 Teak wood steering wheel, now I have heard that in 1967 Teak wood steering wheels were not an option, is this true?

He says it came with a 67 corvette that he owned many years ago, then sold the car, but kept the steering wheel. The car had come with both the plastic wheel and the Teak wood wheel, he took off the Teak wood wheel prior to selling the car and installed the plastic wheel. The Teak wood wheel has been garage art ever since.

Does this mean that this wheel would definitely by an aftermarket wheel if it were never offered as an option?

Also, my car is a 1966, Would this fit and if not, can it be made to fit?

There were no teak wheels offered in 1967. Strickly an option in 1965 and 66 at a price of about $48.00. He may have a real Corvette teak wheel in which case it certainly will fit your Corvette or it may simply be one of the many cheap wood wheels that were offered years ago and continue today.:thumbs:

Obviously, if this is a Repro Teak wheel for a 67 then what would be a fair price range you would expect to pay for one in good condition?

Im curious how you tell a real one from a repro?

I am not an expert, but I have been told that a good repro will cost around $500. There is a thread on how to tell the difference, I just cant find it this morning.

A new repro would be around $500.00. I've seen them on auction sites and vendor sites. I would think that a used one could have the price negotiated depending on the condition. For a '66, it would be worth having one...they look real nice.

The '63-'66 steering wheel core was one-piece at the hub, and the '67 wheel core was two-piece; the lower spoke underlapped the center and made that area a double-thickness. A double-thickness '67 wheel will only fit on a '67 hub, or on a '64-'66 hub that's been machined-out from 5 o'clock to 7 o'clock to accommodate the added thickness of the center spoke.

You can't use a '67 hub on a '64-'66 column, as the cancelling cam mechanism design is completely different. :thumbs:

What John says is 100% correct. When you buy a teak wheel from us we give you a spacer, at no charge, to fill the gap in the hub so the early wheel will fit the 67 hub. The wheel sell for $500 inclusive free shipping in the lower 48 states.

I went to see the Steering Wheel and it is a 1967 core with a beautiful Teak Wheel. This Steering Wheel looks Brand new and would have been a Great addition to my car.

That is too bad that I can't use it on my 66.

i spoke about this with a master judge in Kissmmee NCRS event ... his reply was "very hard to tell .. age and wear" - Eric Freeman out of Charolette N.C. makes an excellent after market teak wheel and supplies a cam to fit a 1967 hub .. sells for $550. his email DRVETTEJR@AOL.COM

I bought a teak repro wheel hoping to put on my 64 that has a 65 or 66 tele. column.

same appearance as the '64-'66 plastic wheels.The difference was the two piece center section as shown in John Z's photo
