Bee Jay

The builder of that car realized a Ferrari V12 was going to be in the $20K range-for just the engine...NOT the whole project!!!

V-12s are cool, but it's power & performance that counts!!!!!!!!!!
Like I said-When finished the Stingray V12 will have BETTER performance then the LS-5 that came in it... Weigh 200lbs less and have 350ishHP NET vs the originals 365HP GROSS rating...

That engine scores high on the uniqueness scale but if you want performance equal to that go with a lightly modified LS engine.
I really looked at doing an LS- was really interested in this motor since my car was originally came w/ a 454- but $10 grand?? However- w/ a STOCK LS1 motor -this car w/ be really close...And I'll be able to do this swap for less-as it stands right now I've made money parting out the donor car and my son got new tires for his BMW...

Good luck with the build, looks awesome.

You need to post up some exhaust clips when it's done.

I've seen very few jag motors in chevy, ford etc.

But I've seen a slew of sbc in jag bodies ... without fail each one resulted from need to replace a failed jag motor at reasonable cost.

Jag motors etc are nice to look at & can make good power but nothing else makes grunt as economically (HP&TQ/$) as sbc ... but gm LSx may be there already.

The General did build at least one V-12 Corvette. It was a C4 that used the Falconer V-12. A Falconer was a Small Block Chevy that had 4 more Cylinders. GM made the Frame and Body longer between the Firewall and Radiator.

Richard454 04-20-2010 08:58 AM

The Falconer would be nice -But at $65K -would sort of bust my budget....

The General also built an Impala w/ the BMW V12 engine. From my understanding it was to study the drive by wire technology-

I think it's cool. Definitely post some more pics of the build if you can.

For example the V12 BMW 850 had topspeed electronically limited to 250 km/h ( 155 mph) in Europe and it did 0-100 km/h in about 6,3 seconds. I'd say that engine has plenty of oomph even in stock state.

Since nobody has said it yet: I'd like to hear the sound of that somaday. :D

Not to mention the 850 weighs in at 4200lbs- but it's aerodynamics smoke the vettes...

Some hint of what it can sound like.

I definitely like the sound of the Ultima GTR... :smiliedrool:
This is an awesome engine
One of my friends has got a green Lamborghini Murcielago. The sound is not too bad either... Inside and outside :D

Want to hear it :

Thanks guys-

Before I pulled the motor from the donor car- I sawzalled the muffler off and It really sounded good. Not to mention thanks to Platinum prices on the rise again I got $350 for the old cats!!!

Here's the latest- I'm working on the cooling system-

Dewitts radiator w/ twin spals- looks like I'll use the stock BMW Expansion tank- up nice and high so I'll bleed the air out of the system really well. I still have plenty of room for a mechanical fan- but I've got to run the air -which I might pull out below the radiator?

It's really amazing that such an engine can fit a C3 chassis, and keep everything under a stock hood. :smash:
Very nice job, Richard !

Did you set the new engine at the same angle ( transmission ) as the stock GM V8 or is it slightly different ?
Looking at the pictures, it seems that the new V12 is almost horizontal.

In the pics- the back end of the engine IS sitting higher than it will. I have a jack under it- the speedo cable is in the way of a temp sensor- easy fix.

As far as the placement of the motor- I used the crank centerline on the Chevy engine as my reference when designing the mounts for the BMW V12. So -yes it's be at the same angles as the stock. Also going w/ a dry sump- I have no clearance issues at all.

I have had the great opportunity to work on Historic race cars. Like the Silk Cut and Castrol Jaguar IMSA cars. Don't ever say Jag's are down on HP. I have worked on the over 7 liter Jag racing V-12's The 7.0 liters were @ 427 ci 7.2's were @ 440 ci fire breathers which both whipped up on 1000+ HP turbo Porsches. They even had a stroker model of something like 8 liters

They are just bad to the bone. Yes, your stock XJS v-12 was a very smooth, but junky boat motor.

Looks good so far, can't wait to see it run :)

Richard454 04-23-2010 08:18 PM

Thanks guys-

I''m really happy w/ the way it fits. Ironically, It'll be a heck of a lot easier changing plugs on this motor than the old LS-5!!!

Here's some mock up intake covers- What do you think?

Bugman Jeff 04-23-2010 11:01 PM

Some of the shallow finned covers similar to what the ZZ502 uses would match the center intake cover nicely.
