Service Tire Monitor System

Hello, from drageOCCA,
I'm newly registered to this site. And would like to get information on
my C5 displaying a message that reads Service Tire Monitoring System.
I did see someone else with this same issue. Any advice on self repair
would be appreciated. After previous dealership service tech's who don't know what they are doing - I refuse to ever take my vets to a dealership for repairs. After owning C3,C4 and now C5, I've become extremely good at doing my own sevice work with the assistance of some qualified mechanic friends. :chevy:

You are probably going to need new sensors. First, drive your car and check your DIC and see which tire is reading "XXX". Then try re-training them. Do a search in this forum to find the write up. Then if it still tells you to service the tire monitoring system, you may have to replace the sensors in the tires. Fortunately, you have the cheaper sensors to replace. There are several sources for new sensors, several tire stores and Costco sell them as well as some of the supporting vendors here. You will have to break down the wheels to get to the sensors so a tire shop would be advised. Good luck... :flag:

New or rebuilt sensors will fix up right up.

Here is the procedure. Plus some helpful sites

https://www.corvetteforum.com/techti....php?TopicID=1

http://www.stengel.net/diccodes.htm

1) Turn ignition on ( TO reset tire pressure monitor Procedure )

2) Press "Reset" button in order to clear any IPC display warning messages

3) Press and release the "Options" button on the DIC to scroll through the display options until the IPC display is blank

4) Press and hold the DIC "Reset" button for 3 seconds

5) Press the "Options" button again until TIRE TRAINING message appears

6) Press "Reset" button until the IPC "Learn L Front Tire" message appears in order to begin the programming

7) Install the J41760 Tire Pressure Monitor (TPM) System Programming Tool (large magnet will do) over the left front valve stem

8) The horn will sound, indicating the left front TPM sensor is programmed (if this takes more than 15 seconds, pull magnet back and try again, it will give you three tries. Then you must start over)

9) When the horn sounds, proceed to program the next TPM sensor in the following order as directed by the IPC messages: -Learn R Front Tire -Learn R Rear Tire -Learn L Rear Tire Programming can be canceled by turning ignition off, waiting 2 minutes with no sensors being learned, finishing all 4 wheels or through the DIC. If the programming is canceled with less than 4 sensors learned, it will only accept the codes programmed up to that point.

All the tires read so what senses the tires must be bad.

Not entirely sure what you're asking. This thread is about the DIC warning stating to service the tire monitoring system. Typically, this only happens if the car is not able to get a reading from one (or more) of the sensors (TPMS) that read the air pressure in each tire. When this happens, the effected tire(s) will read "xxx" when you check the pressure on the DIC. I had this happening intermittently with one of mine until I replaced that particular sensor. To clarify, these sensors do NOT tell you if the tire is bad or not. It can't sense tread depth or even proper balance. It only reads tire pressure which should ideally be at 30psi when the tire is cold. This is a VERY OLD thread, but I hope that this answers your question.

I am getting the signal to service tire monitoring but all my tires are reading tire pressures correctly No xx.

I suspect that your issue is similar to mine where the issue is only intermittent. If you have a reading on all 4 tires, and they're all above 25psi, I would just hit the reset button. This should make the message go away. If it happens again, immediately check the reading for all four tires again. Hitting reset should be a short term solution to your issue. However, you'll likely want to replace your sensors eventually. That will be a long term solution.

What model year C5? '97-2000 sensors are different than '01-'03.

I realize I’m resurrecting an old thread, but I followed the procedure listed above but the LF sensor doesn’t respond to the magnet while the other 3 do. Any advice?

MWWarlord 08-09-2021 12:32 PM

Can't promise you it will work, but I had a similar issue. Replacing the battery fixed it (and a few other issues as well).

with any modern device that runs on battery power, the usual problem is a bad battery. I have had entertaining talks with service techs who tell the not uncommon tale of people , before they were wall mounted, bring in TV sets for repair when the problem was dead batteries in the remote.

chasboy 08-09-2021 08:25 PM

Are we talking about a battery in the TPM or my car battery? It’s a Duralast Platinum about 2 years old so I don’t think it’s that.

Moved to C5 Tech.

popshumphrey 08-10-2021 12:55 PM

The only way to replace the tpms battery is to replace the tpms. Since 3 are reading, it is probably that one sensor. As I understand it, they are designed to last about 10 years. So if they are original then the sensor just needs to be replaced. If the car battery were bad, then it would seem none of the sensors would work.

chasboy 08-10-2021 01:16 PM

would it be better to just replace them all? Maybe I’m on borrowed time anyway.
Are there particular brands that forum members prefer?

popshumphrey 08-10-2021 01:29 PM

probably borrowed time. I just did all four as well. The front two were out. I used the schraders which were original equipment and worked great in my 02.

BTW- A 'safety feature' of the 1998 C5 and Tire Pressure Monitor System (TPMS) is that the computer will limit the vehicle speed to 55 mph if it cannot read tire pressure from a sensor.
