Help identify an engine. Is it correct for my 1964?
Looking for a correct engine for my 1964.My car was manufactured in december 1963(D5)
I came over this engine and need some help to decode it:flag: Here is the info the seller sent me: The only number I can find for a date stamp is "J232" That number is located on the top right rear of the block, behind the right head. The other number on the back left side of the block, that is the GM number is 3782870. The number under the passenger side head is FA36985. The small number is L145112. Let me know if this helps. Also, the GM number I sent over shows an earlier year manufactured 327, I believe it was 1962 - 1965. |

"I thought yours was a 63 when I commented". I am told NCRS gives you a 4 month window. Mine is a k62 with a March build. Non original block. I am sure the real experts will chime in soon to correct or confirm. |
October of 62 would be for a 63 or am I missing something? I have looked for a decent price on a late 63 block forever since mine was born on January 20th of 64. I finally rebuilt what I had.

It got to right for my car wich is a 1964 model. Assembled D5 wich is December 1963 if i am not wrong.

The date code J232 indicates October 23, 1962 which is too early for your December 5, 1963 car if you're trying to stay within the four month limits for a "correct" engine. Even four months, I'm told, is stretching the limits. Six weeks or less would be the ideal. Couldn't find the head numbers in anything relating to Corvette but I could be wrong on that since my references are limited. Dave

I was hoping that it was the right one or my car.

You need a 3782870 block (from Flint, not Tonawanda) cast not more than six months prior to your car's final assembly date. A Flint block will have a single digit for the year in the casting date, and a Tonawanda block will have two digits for the year. A Flint block will also have a square-head 1/8" NPT plug just above the timing cover at about 11 o'clock - Tonawanda blocks don't have that plug. |
Thanks
