I buy it in my oil. It comes pre-mixed.
All I have to look for is the CJ-4 notation on the upper part of the "donut" logo shown below on the left and I know I'm good to go. ;) The beauty is that they sell this pre-mixed oil anywhere from Wal-Mart to Autozone, and it has enough ZDDP for any of our older engines. http://www.api.org/certifications/images/EOLCS.jpg |

I have checked all the auto stores in the Manchester,NH area and nobody knows anything about or what ZDDP is. I can only find Valvoline VR-1 10w-30. Is this going to give me the protection I need to break in my new rebuilt short block and cam? (Or complete engine.) I've used EOS, and now have CompCam break-in lube in it, with straight 30 weight. would like to switch to 10w-30. and have some assurance.

The latest info I have is that CJ4 does not have the high levels of Zi and Ph that the earlier CH4 and CI4 had. Short of finding some of the older oils somewhere, I'd be adding a ZDDP supplement as well.

Terry https://www.cbest.chevron.com/genera...DS31613234.PDF Or, as another poster has noted, you can still find a CI-4 oil. My point now, and in my original post above, is that oils are readily available that will meet the needs of our older vehicles. There can be a downside to adding too much ZDDP and much of the time it is wasted money. Other than at break in of a new engine, I cannot think of any other time I would add a ZDDP type of product to my oil. "Your opinion may differ, your mileage may vary, yadda yadda yadda." :D |

For a break in I would use VR-1 + EOS. After cam break in is done, switch to straight 10W-30 VR-1. VR-1 has 0.14/0.13 zinc/phosphorus, more than enough for a flat tappet cam, even my CC XE274H cam. This is what I have run for the last two years without problems, on my 383. I believe, if you get enough of the right stuff (Z/Ph) in your oil, you do not need 'mouse milk' except for flat tappet cam break in. |
protecting yout flat tappet cam

Terry The phosphorus limit on CJ-4 diesel oils is 1200 ppm. Note that this is an upper limit. Doesn't mean they all have just below 1200 ppm (and I suspect that this is what you are hearing). The older CI-4 had an upper limit of 1400 ppm. Again, this was an upper limit and the actual amount of phosphorus may vary by manufacturer. At the risk of annoying Baxsom, I'm going to agree with 69small block. There are actually automotive oils with high levels of ZDDP that don't need any additives, and in answer to the original posters question, I too get mine in my oil. :smash: The two I've used in my 02 Z06 track car: AMSOIL Dominator Synthetic 10w30 Racing Motor Oil (1378 ppm zinc, 1265 ppm phosphorus) AMSOIL SAE Synthetic Premium Protection 10w40 (1575 ppm zinc and 1424 ppm phosphorus) I'd probably use the later for a daily driver. P.S. Sorry Baxsom. :blueangel: |
