copper head gaskets any good?
just wandering if any one here has used copper head gaskets on there high performance rebuild ?
is copper a good idea? they can be reused ? are they less likely to blow out/leak ? iv got a Corteco brand .20" head gasket to use but unsure if i should get some thing else. the felpro mls brand seems of good quality ? any thoughts would be great to hear. tia |
MLS is good, make sure your machinist leaves a very smooth finish, I mean real smooth. Once they are on dont take them off.
BLOCKMAN can tell you more on this, aka the "Professor". Leave the composite (very common) and copper comments up to the others. |
thanks for your help man.

Copper is good if you back tork the gasket. If you don't they will leak and you will have problems.

hi thanks for your reply ,what does" back torque "the gasket mean?
and is it a expensive job to get either block or heads o,ringed? which is better, get heads or block done when o,ring is concerned? tia |

That means tork the head gaskets back wards after you did your original tork.I would "o"ring the block.

They also make a copper gasket spray that can be used with steel gaskets for iron heads. I dont know if it makes a difference or can be compared to the copper gaskets.

gaskets
my 86 had a steel shim gasket from th factory. It lasted 100,000 miles.
That was iron to iron. My 89 had black composits from factory, that was alum. to iron. My machinist uses a steel shim and a composite to get deck height. I would guess it's all in what makes you feel comfortable. Copper head gaskets to me would be for low compression engines as the copper would burn back in a modern Hi-po engine. otherwise, why would they use steel to line the composite gaskets and stel shim from the factory? Copper on the exhaust where high heat is ok, because there's no combustion pressure, but high heat plus pressure makes copper old school. |
hi fellas
i think i might give the copper head gasket a miss. and i will get a pair of cometic mls gaskets @ $ 86.16 each. iv got 4.060" pistons and the tech guy said to buy the 4.100" bore size. they have 0.27" gaskets which are the thinnest they have. part # h1518sp1027s. thanks for your replies. |
