Z06 Cam Best cam? Best place to purchase?

Im looking for a good all around cam for my 01 Z. Right now I have LG street headers, X pipe, Borla stingers, Halltech and a retune. Im thinking a good mid-top cam like the LG G5X1? Any suggestions? I want it driveable, but I expect to lose some drive quality, I just want more power, the sound and then more power.

Anybody know of a shop with good prices??

Man i would stick with LG Motorsports they have a badass price with tune and smaller pulley and dyno!

kinda in the same boat buddy. I have been talking with anthony at LG about my setup. I told him i wanted a good cam for street use/open track events. I dont want max power but i wanted a cam with good low/mid range power. The two choices he gave me were the g5x1E and the g5x2.

I'm running a G5-X2 on a 114 LSA and my good buddy Mike (illmac77) is running a G5-X1E w/ AFR 205s (I have stock heads). I wanted something that made power but was still daily drivable if I wanted it to be.

I'd never go any bigger than my cam... in fact if it's a true daily driver I'd go w/ the G5-X1E. Mike made 455ish rwhp and I made 436... but he's got a smidge better low speed drivability... I'm not talking about cruising at 1100 rpms... I laugh when tuners show that as proof of streetability, most all cams will cruise at low RPM. The real areas are how does it do in stop/go driving and crawling through a parknig lot?

Plus... another huge area is who's doing your tuning. My car sucked after the first tuner didn't know what he was doing. After having a good tuner (Ed Hutchings at Automotive Technology Inc.) do a full street tune the car drive's near stock.

If I could do it all over again I'd go with a smidge smaller cam and some great heads. Tony Mamo at AFR has a H/C package using a 224/228 cam that makes 470ish rwhp.

I am running a 224/230 custom cam on XFI lobes and made 432rwhp/400rwtq on an otherwise stock motor. I got lucky and picked the perfect cam for me the first time.

So where did you buy that cam from?

Any place that can order you a custom cam from Comp such as Thunder Racing and Texas Speed will work. There's a few of us on LS1tech running this cam on difference LSAs. Patrick G on there can hook you up.

^ Is the XFI the more mild lobe?

:iagree:

I'm running a similar cam by patriot performance (225/229), and I am making 442/405 SAE with AFR 205 Heads, BBK Shorty headers, and stock Z cats...... Great power and drivability

It has a faster ramp rate and higher lift than the XERs, but it easier on the valve train. It's getting more and more popular now. The cam looks small, but the lifts are over .600.

^ How is it easier on the valvetrain if it has faster ramp rates?

From what I understand, it doesn't slam the valves closed as hard as some other lobes. I'm not a cam guru so I don't know all of the details other than what I've read on LS1tech. I don't have the typical sewing machine sound under the hood either.

Cobra4B 10-06-2008 11:06 PM

^ Oh... well then maybe it opens them fast and lets them down easy... I've got a nice singer under the hood, but she makes good power so I'm fine w/ it. Plus my hood is vented and I have yella terras which kick it up a notch.

I'm in no way trying to convince you to swap anything. Your car is too sick to mess with.

Well it sounds like my best bet is the LG G5X2 or the comp cams with 224/230 .581.
585-114. What do you guys think? And do I need an intake or will the stock LS6 intake work?

If you are going with the Comp Cams 224/230, get it on XFI lobes instead (.609/.604) and make more power.

Cam?

Anyone have any other suggestions/advice. Im now leaning towards the comp cam 224/230 .581.585 114 and the ASP pulley while Im in there.

VIPERBLUELX 10-08-2008 09:38 AM

Call Ed Curtis and get a custom cam.

Cobra4B 10-08-2008 10:19 AM

^ That's who we got the heads/cam/carb setup for our Panoz. Waiting to install it all after VIR next weekend.
