A thread from the grave ...

Not dead yet! Apparently it has gone underground, but is still quite active and alive. Looking at the number of views, it seems to have been rising at a rate of about 10 to 12 thousand new views a year for the last 5 to 6 years. The thread is full of factual information and this is C6 General, so all that underground activity is not surprising.

The LS2 is not dead!

Food for through, but in 2005 when the LS-2 came in the New C6 corvettes, there was no Z06 model that year.

So what you had was a surplus of C5 z06s that GM was still trying to sell, and posting that the 2005 z51 option C6 was not only out handling, making more power, but out braking the C5 z06, would have had GM putting an even more heavy discounts to the old C6 zo6's stock to try to move them off the dealer lots isntead.

In 2006, the C6 was offered in a Z06, so no reason to change the HP rating on the LS-2 cars for 2006 and 2007 instead (dealer still sitting on C5's that they where still trying to sell, without just giving them away isntead).

As for the LS-3, granted that its a stronger block, but nail in the crouch on that motor, is that GM dropped the compression down to work with lower octane fuels. So had they left the compression the same as the LS-2, would have not been much HP difference between it, and the LS-7.

As for the LS-7, the single problem that that motor has always had, is the breathing room under the vet hood. Take the sb4 7.0, and it putting out 775HP.

Point blank, Gm is now going to super chargers for the vet motors in search of more powder, and its a step in the wrong direction (using the TVS-2300). At the pressures that it needs to push, so GM can keep up with the HP race, it puts out too much heat, and is causing nothing but problems. Would a TVS-2600 help the problem, yes, but when the SB4 is already making 775HP, no reason to go super charged isntead.

so the vet has reached the point of HP that is is no longer viable as a rear wheel drive only, front mounted engine car instead. Going to mid engine will held solve some of the problems, but by the time that happens, HP levels will be up in the 1K range, and you need to go to 4 wheel drive to keep the power planted to the ground (instead of just hobbling the motor via TM like they have been doing instead).

Point blank, the improvements of the vet are happening at too slow of a paces verses the HP increases its getting, and this is putting the Vet so far behind the advancements of the current super cars, that in a few years, the only thing that the vet will be know for then, is that is just another american muscle car isntead.

I read this quickly the first time and posted that it was well researched but in the end was it worth all the ink.

Now looking at it agin I am still impressed and am going out to sell my 2008 LS3 and get the much heralded LS2!

Some good information and research went into this thread.

Good read

So I read this through all of the first batch of posts and I have to say that the logic presented is sound. My entire life I've heard that 10hp is needed for every 100lbs you add in weight when drag racing no matter the circumstances. This thread presents a great case with alot of facts and information.

Good Work OP

:iagree:

I'm so glad that I found and read through this entire thread.

As a fairly new Corvette owner I was really impressed with the car and wanted to read and learn as much about them as possible. I was taken aback by what I perceived to be an almost contemptuous attitude by some on these threads for the LS2 engine.

I can see that this all goes back to corporate manipulation, politics and perception with the LS2 ending up being Corvettes undeserved "Tar Baby". I wonder how things would have turned out if the 05-07 Corvettes had come powered with an LS6 instead of an LS2.

one more reason not to buy cars or parts via "numbers"...many are bs

even many cam specs on old cars arent what they are said to be factory, aftermarket too.

ps there was no 560hp produciton GM big block anything, more "lore".

I love my LS2 Corvette. It was great reading these old articles. Nice work.

Reliability: LS2 vs LS3

Just ran across a website comparing LS2 and LS3. Obviously, LS3 was declared the better engine, but there was a comment after the article in which a former GM tech declared the opposite. Determine validity for yourself.

07/11/2017 AT 1:41 PMI dyno tested LS engines when I worked for GM. Bottom line is you can beat the snot out of an LS2 for 72 hours, and it makes more HP, more TQ, less crankcase pressure and less blowby as the test proceeds. You can literally compare run data from 1 hour into test against data 2 hours into the test and see an improvement. Likewise, between hour 72 and hour 71. Conversely, the LS3 would snatch a wristpin out of a piston ~23-25 hours into the same test. LS2 is far superior based on my direct experience testing both.

This thread is from 2008, but the LS2 is a SAE certified horsepower/torque engine....400hp/400tq. Chevrolet did not sand bag the true numbers like they did in the 1960's

FAUEE 02-25-2021 07:50 AM

If the issue was SAE certification as you claim, then why wouldn't cars produced after that point with the LS2 be rated higher? GTOs, CTSVs, TBSS, they all used the LS2 and none were not rated for any higher than in the early C6s...
