1981 Vette. Body mounts. Location ?

Anyone....

Can anyone talk to me about body mounts.
Where are they and how many of them ?

Diagrams anywhere ?
Big job changing them ?
How do you know they are shot ?

Thanks

4 eachside. can go easy if bolts cooperate or can be a royal pain. can raise body and do one side at a time.

i don't remember the size of the bolts but it's nothing special. the front ones are forward of the birdcage. you have to access them from under and inside the wheelwell. the second set you get from inside the cockpit. remove the kickpanel down at the footwell. the third (if i remember right) is just forward of the rear wheels. i'm really fuzzy exactly but i think you have to get them from the outside. the last set is in the very back of the luggage compartment. pull up all the carpet from the rear forward and you'll see a well on either side that has the bolt. use penetrating oil a day or two before to help with the rust.
hope that helps.

There are 8, 4 each side.
If you have no rust issues they are not a real bad job, but its some work
Rattling body, doors not lining up, body lean on the frame, all those indicate compressed mounts. Yours is an 81 so they are compressed, count on it.
Replacing them I would go with Urethane, last time you will ever replace them. Its just there to isolate the body from some frame vibration, so anything other than solid mounts will work. I like the urethane because its more stabil than rubber.
The passenger side is pretty easy, loosen all 8, then use a floor jack with a piece of wood to lift the body a couple inches off the frame and replace the mounts. Clean and paint the metal under the mount cussions whilt its off of them. be sure and get the shims back in the same locations.
The drivers side takes a little more work, you will need to disconnect the rag joint for the steering and the brake lines going to the MC.
Tanke a look at the #2 mounts before doing anything else, see what they look like, this could be a bag of snakes.

I believe there is one on the nose as well. If you are taking the complete body off (not just from the firewall back) It can be an ugly job
an air ratchet makes it much easier. When I replaced the mounts and the front clip(body from firewall forward) I couldn't find that bushing new, I used a front differential bushing instead. Good luck
