1967 427 L-89 Corvette
 

How many of the Corvette models that were sold with the L-89 aluminum head option still exist today? There was the Goodwood Green ex Ed Cole coupe offered recently. Also someone in Florida had a pair of L-89 coupes for sale in Marina Blue and also Yellow some time ago. Jerry Heasley found a Red L-89 convertible using a reverse serial number search. The current owner was not aware of the history for that Corvette...
Seem to remember something about a Tuxedo Black L-89 coupe in PA or MA.
Can any of the experts add to the list of L-89 factory 1967 Corvettes that still exist today? Thank you.

All I can say for sure is that Forum member 427 Mitch does have a 67 L89.

Here’s the well known Black/Black car All Muscle Car’s had with three tank stickers: two different ones were publishd on the internet and the third supposed real one that has never been seen in public. Another Black/Black convertible was “found”, restored and later sold to LI area by the same fellow who painted my 63 coupe 35 years ago. He is/was a creative technician.

Another Black/Black convertible was literally built from scraps in Fla. How many do you want to see? They are getting like Copper 55’s and 56’s: they are coming out of the woodwork now, and they made 6? Not really 6, but few.

At the recent Fla NCRS regional, I saw and photographed this 1966 L-89. I don’t know anything about it, but would not be surprised if it was real or otherwise.

Well, what about the maroon convertible that was at Bloomington Gold Corvettes, that Terry of ProTeam was bidding on. That is suppose to be the real McCoy.

I don't think the red 66 coupe with the Florida "L 89 RARE" plate was presented for judging as an L 89. I briefly looked at the car and under the open hood and it was not L 89 configured. The Florida plate did not seem to have any connection to that particular car....maybe it was from another car from another time.

One of the member's here by the name of Drew Papsun may be able to assist you in determining how many of the authentic '67 L-89's are accounted for.

I can't help but to point out that ctjackster seems to think that I do seemingly have two '67 L-89's. He seemingly is correct :eek: :D.

I am no expert at all on these things, but, if interested, I'll gladly share my experience with them :lol:.

Methinks Ol' PeteZ was the winner a couple of months ago on my "Years Owned Score" thread - - so my money is on the guy from Bigfork on this particular topic/issue/point of contention or whatever we are going to call it. Hope you share the experience as proposed.

I have a set of 1967 dated aluminum heads for one of these motors or an L/88. Am not sure is there is a difference, I don't think so.

Anyone here know someone looking for a set of heads like that?

They are aluminum square port heads with 2.19 intakes and 1.84 exhausts.

They are used of course but in good condition.

I haven't got a clue. That 66 car got Top Fright. I think window sticker said it was 390HP. Probably just my mistake based upon the license plate. I asked to speak with the owner, but he wasn't around when I was there. Someone said he was in a wheelchair, but I did not get to meet him.

The "other" L-89 was that famous one, we all love and respect. :D

Hello Charles,
I have been doing research on these Corvettes for over 25 years.
I have documentation on 9 of these. Todate 11 real cars break down
(5) coupes and (6) convertibles. The other (5) are out there.

Drew, Beyond the 11 real cars which you identified, how many cars have you investigated that claimed to be real but were not? What were the factors that caused them to be evaluated as fakes? Also, of the 11 cars that are real, what are the primary ways that these cars were authenticated? I would assume that some were due to clear owner history, some to extensive paperwork, some to evaluation of the vehicle. Your thoughts?

Thank you for all the info and pictures provided here guys! A simple list of color combination and body type would really define what has been learned about L89 production to date. Which month was the first production L-89 Corvette built; before or after the L-88? Would Drew care to confirm if the Marina Blue and Yellow L-89 coupes offered for sale plus the red convertible were on the legit side of his list of 11 L89's that he has confirmed? Is the Black/White L89 coupe that was tested by Car&Driver included in the 11 know examples? Chevrolet did not officially mention the availability of the L-88 option 'a new and very special kind of engine' until the 3rd issue of Corvette News in Vol. 10 1967. Nowhere was the L-89 mentioned. PA seems to have more than it's fair share of great Corvettes...
