right casting number for a 1961 and....
 

The block is stamped 1001C is this corect?

anyone knows what that is? Im so lost with this. I need to sit down and talk to someone about the dates of blocks heads ect...

I`m not a numbers freak but I believe there is more letters and numbers necessary but in what year I dont know. However being a 61 there may be some special reason for yours. I have no knowledge when block stamping began. What always made sense to me is HP, I didn`t give a damn for the number of the engine. Hell I wasn`t keeping score. :lol:

Looks correct, but should be followed by another letter. Some passenger cars only had one letter. What is the casting date?

In the code F1001, the F is June, the 10 is the day of the month, and the 01 is the single digit of the calendar year so it translates to June 10, [6]1. The Saginaw engine plant used the single digit code for the year whereas the Tonawanda plant used the proper two digits for the year. Not sure what the final C may mean. I'm sure someone else here can help.
The 3756519 is a correct number for a 283 manufactured mid "58 through late "61.

Looks like casting number is right for 58-62 but "C" suffix indicates Low horsepower car application.

A 61 Corvette Engine stamped number should look more like this:
10867S1xxxxx plus two suffix letters,
First "1" digit is year (61)
"08" 2nd and third digit indicate Corvette
"67" code for 2 door convertible
"S" for St Louis assembly plant
followed by six digit serial number of which the first digit is always "1"
This is followed by two suffix letters indicating horsepower transmission combination.
Example: 10867S100920CS
1961 Corvette serial number 920 315 Horsepower manual transmission.

Why would this number be so different F1001c than what you show? could it be from a passanger car?

Nope. Only a first digit for the model year and the last six digits of the car's VIN appear on the stamp pad; would be 1xxxxxx, like the 2xxxxxx in the '62 pad photo below.

The engine plant stamp (F1001C) indicates the build date, October 1st; there is no indication of the year in the engine plant stamp - that has to come from the block casting date. The "C" suffix indicates that it was originally a 2-barrel 283 from a full-size passenger car; all Corvette applications had a 2-digit suffix code. :thumbs:
