Emissions testing problem.

In order to get my recently purchased 79 registered, I need to put a catalytic converter on. Currently the exhaust consists of headers with straight pipes, no mufflers. The BMV says two cats are fine. What setup should I use? Dual cats and dual mufflers. Dual cats and no mufflers. What products are recommended? Does anyone have experience with this sort of thing?

What state do you live in?

dktorre 01-24-2007 09:50 PM

I live in Indiana.

If you got to run cats, go with dual hi flo cats and whatever muffler blows your skirt up, stay with the duals. Where are you located? What year car?

Ahh, 79 in indiana

Do you still have the air pump on it?

dktorre 01-24-2007 09:52 PM

It's a 1979.

dktorre 01-24-2007 09:52 PM

There is no air pump.

Dual Cats like this

http://www.jegs.com/webapp/wcs/store...-1&showValue=1

that is for a 2" syatem, they have others.
The muffler depends on how much your neighbors like you, my pref is the SS Bourla's nice sound, not to loud, polished stainless steel,,,

Thank You.

Better check with the DMV again. Federal law states that installing dual cats on a car that originally had a single cat is illegal.

I have run into that as well.

My '89 IROC had a factory 2 cat setup into a 3" pipe and I ran it without a muffler for a while. It was a "tinny" sounding exhaust system. Kinda grated on your nerves as it reved up. I recommend some Walker high-flow cats (got mine from Jegs) and some really open flowmaster type mufflers to resonate the sound.

No joke ... I recommend making some more connections ... find out who'll fudge the inspection/just sign-off on it in exchange for?

Be careful here. I'm not saying don't, but if you've had it inspected and it failed, there is now a paper trail. If another inspector passes it and DMV (SHP in Missouri) catches it they WILL reinspect. The guy that passes it will lose his license, and you both get to pay fines.

All perfectly good advice, however it has not been inspected yet. I have 30 days with the temp plate before I need to get it inspected and I am at 15 days now.

California DMV is particularly anal on these issues. Whether you are effecting the emitting gases, even in a positive way, is not their focus- it's if the system has been altered in whatever way. Therefore, putting in dual cats on a true dual system is patently illegal, because it is altered from the original dual Y into single cat and Y back to dual system. Even tho common sense says two cats would be equal or better than one, emission-wise.
